Preliminary Stage(2006-2007) |
Canadian Professors visited Sunyani in the spring of 2006 to lay out the groundwork for the proposal to the Canadian International Development Agency and the Association of Canadian Community Colleges. These are the two main funding units for the Ghana Project

Year One(2007-2008) |
A team of four students and two faculty from VIU visited Sunyani in the spring of 2007 to work with Ghanaian students and faculty from FFRT and S. Poly. They traveled to surrounding communities to complete needs assessment surveys pertaining to the four main topic areas
Two Ghanaian Professors visited Nanaimo in the fall of 2007 to work with VIU faculty on the development of courses focused on Environmental education. They also had the opportunity to visit attractions and facilities on the island that dealt with the four main topic areas |
Year Two(2008-2009) |
Two students and one faculty member visited Ghana in February of 2008 to begin building the Ghanaian team of faculty and students for the following phase of work. They also completed three pilot radio programs advocating three of the five main topic areas.
In April, 2008, five more students and four more Faculty members from VIU visited Sunyani to work with the Ghanaian team in developing and piloting knowledge transfer strategies pertaining to the five main topic areas.
In September 2008, Ghanaian Professors Emmanuel Acquah, George Lord Opoku-Antwi, Rosemary Adoma Kath, Stephen Yeboah, Philomena Mensah, Gyabbah Eric Nsiah and Victoria Nana Ama Figyina Adu visited Nanaimo to take part in a competency based training program and to develope knowledge transfer strategies regarding the five main topic areas.
Other important successes have been the Trees for Ghana and Books for Ghana campaigns, led by Barry Ostrand. FFRT has been supplied with 32 new books for their library and Barry is hoping to use the funds raised through the Trees for Ghana campaign to bring Ghanaian students to Canada.
An Ecotourism Development Committe has been established in Sunyani, along with environmental clubs, and the Sunyani Environmental Education and Training Centre is now being developed. |
Year Three(2009-2010) |
The new Canadian team has been selected for the Spring 2009 tour, including four students from a wide variety of programs and four faculty members.
