Capital projects under construction 2009 to 2011
Aboriginal Gathering Place
- will provide a special place for VIU’s Aboriginal students, Services for Aboriginal Students and our community partners
- influenced by the traditional Coast Salish pre-European contact structures
- approximately 5,000 square feet
- will be used for small gatherings and sharing of culture and traditions in an educational setting
- project cost: $3.6 million
Cowichan campus
- partnering with the City of Duncan, the District of North Cowichan, Cowichan Valley Regional District and the Cowichan Valley School District
- relocate current campus from the Cowichan Band community center to the new Cowichan Place
- centrally-located at the old fairgrounds site in Duncan
- will focus on education, recreation and culture in the Cowichan Valley
- project cost: $26.2 million-- an additional need of $5 million has been identified to enable the relocation of the culinary arts program and the trades program which are currently both offered off campus.
International Centre for Sturgeon Studies
- will support high quality and innovative research focusing on sturgeon biology, management and hatchery technology for enhancement/restoration and commercial purposes
- research will aid in conserving and restoring endangered sturgeon populations worldwide and supporting the creation of a thriving new industry for sturgeon meat and caviar production
- project cost: $5.2 million
Deep Bay Field Station
- will cluster scientific, environmental, economic and public engagement programming into one facility
- create a centre of excellence and innovation to support sustainable shellfish aquaculture development and preservation of coastal ecosystems
- will be a green design facility that will promote and showcase practical applications of alternative technologies for energy and water usage
- project cost: $8.6 million
