Definitions
Scholarships - for academic excellence
- provide incentives and rewards for high academic achievement
- awarded to students with the highest grade point averages in their program, with a minimum requirement of 7.5 (B+/A-)
- most are awarded on the recommendation of faculty
Bursaries - for financial need
- intended to support students whoe financial situation could prevent their continued studies
- awarded solely on financial need
- students must have a grade point average of 3.0 (C) and be able to demonstrate financial need
Endowed Awards - general purpose criteria
- encourage success and reward achievement
- recognize special qualities in a student that match the donor's priorities
- recipients must have a minimum grade point average of 6.0 (B)
- must demonstrate qualities specified by the donor, such as community involvement, citizenship, affiliation with a certain organization, or career interest
- most require an application by the student
- selected by a VIU faculty committee
