Definitions

Scholarships - for academic excellence

  • provide incentives and rewards for high academic achievement
  • awarded to students with the highest grade point averages in their program, with a minimum requirement of 7.5 (B+/A-)
  • most are awarded on the recommendation of faculty

Bursaries - for financial need

  • intended to support students whoe financial situation could prevent their continued studies
  • awarded solely on financial need
  • students must have a grade point average of 3.0 (C) and be able to demonstrate financial need

Endowed Awards - general purpose criteria

  • encourage success and reward achievement
  • recognize special qualities in a student that match the donor's priorities
  • recipients must have a minimum grade point average of 6.0 (B)
  • must demonstrate qualities specified by the donor, such as community involvement, citizenship, affiliation with a certain organization, or career interest
  • most require an application by the student
  • selected by a VIU faculty committee
