BELIZE

The Tropical Biology Field School takes undergraduate biology students from Vancouver Island University and other Canadian post-secondary institutions to Belize to study the biological diversity of pristine and disturbed habitats.

The Field School assist efforts to provide baseline data about the biodiversity and habitat quality in several locations in Belize. These data can be used for comparative purposes for future studies and may be shared with the Belizean government via colleagues at the University of Belize (with whom we have collaborative relationships).

VIU Bachelor of Education (year 4) students will be completing a 5-week practicum at Holy Cross Anglican School in the small town of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. The students will be teaching in multi-culturally diverse classrooms ranging from kindergarten to grade six. They will teach a variety of subjects and initiate appropriate after-school activities. Initially, Holy Cross was established to provide education for students who normally could not afford school fees, but the school now draws from the entire population of San Pedro.
