University Bridging Program
Malaspina High School is part of Vancouver Island University. Canadian and International high school students experience all the resources and facilities at VIU. There are many examples to illustrate our student immersion within the different university departments. Tourism supports our Tourism 11 and 12; Science labs are used and VIU instructor expertise is shared; Math shares their tutorial lab; Education shares developing teachers for practicums and summer camp. Student Union, Professional Counselling, and Campus Recreation are examples of extra support that students can appreciate.
We have the resources to provide courses that not only prepare students for post-secondary education but allow them to make the transition to first year university courses during their study in our high school.
What does this mean?
Students have a unique opportunity to take university courses on campus. These are considered enrichment courses but serve as credit courses for high school and can provide dual credit for Vancouver Island University and Malaspina High School.
What is a Dual Credit Scholarship?
Students may choose to take a first year Vancouver Island University course during their high school study. Upon successful completion of this course, students receive dual credit. The student takes the class on campus and is awarded 4 high school credits as well as university credit recognized by VIU and most other universities in North America. The Dual Credit Scholarship is awarded to students who have a passion for learning and show strong leadership and academic skills.
What subjects may be offered?
Course offerings vary each year. MHS plans courses that will encourage discovery of the challenges of university level learning. Through our high school courses we can determine if a student has the aptitude and interest to experience this enhanced educational opportunity.
