Pupils will be able to write brief compositions on any simple subject. Pupils will be able to write a letter correctly as to form and punctuation, and will be familiar with abbreviations commonly used in correspondence.
Prescribed Learning Outcomes - by Grade Level
Second Class: Simple sentences, orally and in writing. Short descriptions of simple objects.
Third Class: Simple sentences of any kind, orally or in writing. Short descriptions of simple objects.
Fourth Class: Simple and complex sentences, orally or in writing. Grammatical changes of construction. Short narrative or description. Familiar letters.
Fifth Class: Simple and complex sentences of any kind. Grammatical changes of construction. Narrative and description. Familiar and business letters.

Suggested Instructional Strategies
The slate may be used in teaching this subject, but special care should be taken that its use does not lead the pupil into the habit of scribbling.
Reproduction as an occasional exercise may be used profitably, but the bringing out of originality is of the most permanent value.
Instruction should be given as to the proper method of opening, closing, folding, and addressing a letter.A good knowledge of the forms used in general correspondence should be given.
