What can we learn from the past? What did we learn in the past?
Here you'll find lesson plans for Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, along with History, Geography and Hygiene, as those subjects were taught in the 1890s!
These lesson plans are based on British Columbia curriculum guides, departmental circulars, and provincial exams from the 1890s. We've organized the material in the same way as a modern Integrated Resource Package (IRP), complete with "prescribed outcomes," "recommended learning resources," and "suggested instructional and assessment strategies."
This material connects to the provincial Social Studies curriculum for Grades 2 to 3, Grades 5 and 6, and Grades 10 and 11. We hope teachers will work with local museums and archives and will integrate this historical syllabus with the Social Studies IRPs to recreate their own lessons from the past.
