Hospitality Management Department
Mission and Values:
The Hospitality Management department’s mission is to deliver applied professional and experiential programs to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to achieve success in Hospitality careers. The department's values of diversity, leadership, professionalism and learner/ faculty collaboration are guiding principals throughout the delivery of the programs.
About the Programs:
The Hospitality Management programs provide students with an experiential learning environment where students learn the applied professional knowledge and skills in a variety of settings: classrooms, dining room, kitchen, computer simulations and co-operative education employment. For example, the first and second year Hospitality students will provide Hospitality services and leadership in numerous on campus events. Upper level ( 3rd and 4th year) students will do research assignments that require meeting with Industry leaders to complete the course work. Assignments would include completing a conference plan, do a risk management assessment of a property or completing a full business proposal.
Co-operative education hospitality work placements are another important foundation of the program. These three required paid co–operative education placements link the classroom experience with the Hospitality industry. Placement re-enforce previous learning as well as anticipate future program course work.
A VIU difference is that National and International industry leaders - Fairmont, Delta, Four Seasons Hotel, Tigh-Na-Mara and Marriott - come to our campus to recruit students for co-operative placement and full time employment.
The Hospitality programs are designed to prepare the student for successful careers in hotels, resorts, restaurants, catering and events planning.
