The Community of Nanaimo

Nanaimo is a city of 79,000 residents, centrally located on the east coast of beautiful Vancouver Island. VIU is located within easy walking distance of downtown, with its shops, theatre and restaurants, aquatic centre and sports arena. The spectacular harbourfront is ideal for walking and biking, and the city is blessed with lakes, parks, and trails close to the campus. The city offers an enormous variety of retail outlets, multiplex movie houses and many restaurants and pubs.

Transportation includes city buses, Greyhound service to all points on Vancouver Island, domestic flights from Cassidy Airport in Nanaimo, ferry service to the mainland and Gulf Islands, and frequent float plane service.

Students attending VIU have the very best of both worlds:

  • An accessible, closely-knit community
  • Low cost of living
  • Spectacular natural environment
  • One of the mildest climates in Canada
  • Unlimited recreational opportunities

While Nanaimo and the surrounding area is a huge draw, students have many other exciting opportunities to enjoy, just a short distance form home:

  • Vancouver and Victoria are within easy driving distance (Vancouver is just 20 minutes by float plane)
  • The vibrant surfing scene at Tofino is just two hours away
  • Excellent snowboarding at Mount Washington on Vancouver Island is an hour’s drive
  • Kayaking, whale-watching and camping adventures abound on both the east and west coasts of Vancouver Island
