Introduction to The Institute for Coastal Research
The Institute for Coastal Research (ICR) has an interdisciplinary research mandate focusing on coastal communities of British Columbia, the Pacific North, and beyond. Though a relatively new research centre, it is synthesizing the bonds between local and academic communities and industry through discussion and research. The aim is to foster interdisciplinary research involving the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities as they relate to coastal study, research and activity. The focus is on understanding and promoting the resilience of our coastal social-ecological systems. The ICR mandate has recently expanded to include a range of research, scholarly activities and facilitating functions related to the coast.
Vision Statement
The Institute for Coastal Research (ICR) aims to further understanding of the physical, ecological and social dynamics of the BC coast through the activities of research, creative exploration, and education, and in so doing help guide human activities to bring the greatest good to human communities and least harm to coastal ecosystems. The ICR promotes and stimulates research and education at Vancouver Island University and partner organizations that will assist in the realization of these goals. The ICR is a broad-based, interdisciplinary research organization bringing together scholars and students from many disciplines to focus on coastal issues.
