A Practical Guide to Effective Post Secondary Teaching and Learning

Chapter 3 - Thoughts and Ideas for Self Reflection and Personal Growth

Laura Lipton, an American educator, postulated that we do not learn to teach but rather we learn from our teaching. There is so much to learn as a post secondary teacher. Attributes such as caring, passion, and courage to change make it more rewarding for both the teacher and the learner. One might systematically consider what you and students are doing, why are they or you doing it, and how it could be done better. Open and honest communication with students or colleagues, soliciting specific feedback on your teaching, and an open minded attitude for change are paramount in this reflection, analysis, and adaptation. For many professionals, self improvement is not only better for the clients your serve, it can results in increased job and personal satisfaction.
