Meet VIU's youngest donor
Five-year-old Alden Thom is one of Vancouver Island University’s youngest donors.
Alden was so impressed by his recent visit to the sturgeon tanks at VIU, he decided to raise money at his 5th birthday party to help the endangered species.
On Thursday, Alden donated $35 to VIU President Dr. Ralph Nilson and Dr. Harald Rosenthal, President of the World Sturgeon Conservation Society. Rosenthal happened to be on campus to review plans for VIU’s $4.8-million International Centre for Sturgeon Studies (ICSS), currently under construction. Read full story
VIU students help Haiti

Students in Steven Earle’s Environment Geology course at Vancouver Island University had just started studying the causes and characteristics of earthquakes when Haiti was hit by a devastating quake.
“We’re trying to do as much as we can,” said student Nicole Soby. “We had just started studying fault lines and plate tectonics when the earthquake hit. It’s really horrific to see what’s going on and the people in need. It’s been a powerful learning experience.” Read full story
Cutting-edge research

Dr. Guy Le Masurier, professor of Sport, Health & Physical Education at Vancouver Island University, is receiving a prestigious honour for his research.
Le Masurier is an expert in physical activity measurement using motion sensors (e.g., accelerometers and pedometers) and uses his expertise to examine the impact of physical activity on health outcomes.
Le Masurier teaches two core courses at VIU (Research Methods in Physical Activity and Scholarship for Sport, Health, and Physical Education) in the Physical Education Major that allow him to guide students in the scholarship of discovery, application, and teaching. Read full story

Working in Canada

As of recently , international students are able to obtain an open work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program, with no restrictions on the type of employment and no requirement for a job offer. In addition, the duration of the work permit has been extended to three years across the country. Previously, the program only allowed international students to work for one or two years, depending on location. Read more

VIU's student residences offer comfortable, convenient and cost-effective on-campus housing for students from all over the world.
