Learn what you love - there's still time to apply

Vancouver Island University (VIU) is still accepting applications for the September 2010 start. University applications for admission can be downloaded (pdf) or completed online. Applicants interested in VIU's dual degree MBA/MScIB program can apply for the January 2011 start.

Did you know that VIU has a high school on campus called Malaspina High School (MHS)? Visit the MHS website to learn about the popular summer camp program for students 13-18 years old.

VIU business students invited to participate in international competition

Members of the VIU Faculty of Management team travel to Concordia University in Montreal to compete in the John Molson Undergraduate Case Competition. From left: Jenna Pozar, Colby Althouse, Jason McKinnon, Brett Smalley and coach Chris Jaeger.

Students from VIU's business program were one of 20 teams selected to participate in the international John Molson Undergraduate Case Competition.

This prestigious event invites twenty universities from renowned international business schools to participate in an intensive week-long challenge.  Using the knowledge and experience they have acquired from their respective undergraduate curriculums, teams of four students will analyze and evaluate business cases. Once preparation is complete, the participants will present their strategic solutions and a detailed plan of action to a panel of corporate executives – all of whom will use their distinctive background and experience to judge the participants’ presentations. Olympic fever

VIU history professor Tim Lewis wears a different team jersey to each of his hockey history classes.

Vancouver Island University History professor Tim Lewis (pictured above) is clearly delighted with the challenge of picking Canada’s finest hockey moment. Lewis developed and teaches two hockey history courses at VIU--Hockey and the Canadian Identity to 1952: The Development of a National Obsession, and Hockey and the Canadian Identity since 1952: Canada’s Game in the Cold War and Beyond. VIU music instructor Alex Tsisserev has the role of “sonic branding architect” for the Winter Olympics.

Vancouver Island University music instructor Dr. Alex Tsisserev (pictured above) played a key role in shaping the experience of athletes, dignitaries, members of the media and others who attend the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The music industry veteran had the task of programming original and distinctive playlists for use at six venues in Whistler and Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Full story

Canadian Olympic luge athlete Meaghan Simister will talk about her experiences at the Winter Games.

Olympian Meaghan Simister (pictured above) visited Vancouver Island University Wednesday, March 17, to present awards to competitors on campus who were inspired by the Calgary luger as they took part in their own race.

The 24-year-old niece of VIU Criminology chair Joanne Simister sent a motivational message to members of eight teams in the Campus Recreation “Biggest Luger” competition. Full story

International students pick up cooking tips while brushing up on English

A week after a group of international students at Vancouver Island University learned the word “snack” in Madelaine Hill’s Communications 1 course, they were finding out how to make Rice Krispie squares. “Measurements are part of the benchmarks for language training so we thought it would be fun to come and cook something,” Hill said. Working in Canada

As of recently , international students are able to obtain an open work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program, with no restrictions on the type of employment and no requirement for a job offer. In addition, the duration of the work permit has been extended to three years across the country. Previously, the program only allowed international students to work for one or two years, depending on location. Read more
