Nanaimo Art Gallery presents Ian Garrioch: Universe in a Jar, a retrospective exhibition that spans five decades and includes over thirty paintings, a number of drawings, and a selection of sculptural timepieces drawn from personal, private and public collections. All aspects of Garrioch's artistic career are represented, including recent canvases exhibited in public for the first time.
For nearly 30 years Garrioch taught in the Department of Art and Design at Malaspina College (now Vancouver Island University), where he served as Department Chair and taught printmaking, painting, drawing and design. He has been highly influential, impacting several generations of artists on Vancouver Island.
A practicing artist since the late 1960s, he has produced hundreds of artworks and enjoyed considerable commercial success with pieces in notable public collections such as the BC Provincial Collection, the Canada Council Art Bank, and dozens of private collections across Canada and the US.
A personal talk, and unique tour of the exhibition with the artist, on Saturday June 1, 2013, at 1:00 pm in the Upper Gallery, will provide greater insight and accessibility to this vital contemporary voice.
