Vancouver Island University Board of Governors congratulates VIU Chancellor Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, on his re-election as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.
“VIU values the strong leadership of Chief Atleo and we appreciate that he is able to contribute his strong skills and talents to our university as well as the AFN,” said Board Chair Mike Brown.
“Shawn’s commitment to education is evident and he serves as an inspiration to students and the entire university community,” Brown said.
Atleo was installed as VIU’s Chancellor in September 2008, becoming the First Aboriginal Chancellor in the BC. In May 2011, VIU’s Board of Governors accepted the recommendation of the VIU Alumni Association and unanimously approved Atleo’s reappointment as Chancellor for a second three-year term.
Brown noted the Atleo family has played an important role in the evolution of Vancouver Island University. Chancellor Atleo’s father, Dr. Richard Umeek Atleo taught at VIU from 1994 to 2004 and was a key figure in the development of the university’s First Nation Studies program.
