Thursday Night: UBC-O 77 VIU 71
Not a bad effort after a very long day of travel. I was not expecting a lot after hitting the road at 7:00 am, but we battled away after falling behind to make it respectable in the end. I made sure that all 12 played solid minutes in order to get our legs back under us and to prepare for the 2 games that followed. UBC-O once again has a solid team and will be a handful once again this season in the BCCAA.
Friday Afternoon: Red Deer 74 VIU 72
Red Deer is a very athletic and talented team. We are still experimenting and trying to figure out our defensive identity, but the 17 ORB was unexcusable. We were down 9 at the half and 15 mid way through the 3rd. We then started to lock down defensively. We got to within 2 point with 3 seconds left, only to miss a layup to put it into OT. Not too concerned as the effort was there and the execution was much better down the stretch. Freshman Jake Hayton did a brilliant job for us at the point due to early foul trouble. Mike Wohlers led with 21, while Pat McCarthy chipped in with 14.
Saturday Afternoon: VIU 88 Mount Royal 67
We were much better today, especially at the defensive end. We held the defending National Champs to just 25 points in the first half, building a big lead. Our only let down, was the inability of our bigs to adjust to the officiating. Jacob Thom was all over the floor as he recorded a triple-double (12 points, 12 assists, and 14 steals). Mike Wohlers was lights out in the first half and finished with a game high 33, while Andrew Kaban had his best game of the year, finishing with 23.
