20/04/05- 2005 MARINER ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE LIST

Congratulations to the 21 student-athletes that achieved a B+ average or higher. LIST .

The Malaspina Mariner Athletics department is extremely proud these students. 
Sabine Stephan a Provincial Badminton Bronze Medalist in Womens Singles was the top achiever of all Mariner athletes.
She had a perfect 10 GPA ... thats an A+ average !!
This also helped the badminton team earn top team GPA honours.
Women's Soccer and Men's Volleyball placed second and third in the top performing teams.

 

 

 


12/04/05- 25th ANNUAL MARINER AWARDS BANQUET 

The evening began with a standing ovation for the nation!!

30/12/04- XMAS VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT RESULTS
Mariners defeat Douglas in the finals 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-17)
In the semi's Douglas defeated the Alumni team 3-1 and in the other semi's Malaspina defeated Capilano 3-.

14/11/04- Another Mariner Record Set !!
The Mariners continue to set higher standards.
This past weekend in a marathon match Jamie Broder posted 24 kills in Saturdays 3-2 win over UCC.
The previous record was 23 set by Avril Smith back in November of 2000.

25/10/04 - Rudi Kitzmann

BCCAA Athlete of the week
(week of Oct 18-24)
Rudi  was outstanding this weekend in a 3-0 sweep of the Camosun Chargers. Rudi was a dominant force with 10 kills , 1 block, 2 aces and 10 digs. She was recognized by the league for her achievments with BCCAA athlete of the week status.

07/09/04- Jamie Broder competes at Worlds
On September 11th Jamie and her partner Kristina Long will be in Portugal for the World Beach Volleyball Championships. They qualified by winning the U-18 national beach championships in 2003 and placing second at the U-20 nationals this year. They will play a 14 team playoff with four teams moving onto the main draw. Mariner Athletics is thrilled to assist Jamie financially in getting to Portugal.


09/09/04- MARINER SPORT CAMPS A HUGE SUCCESS
Over the summer basketball/volleyball camps were held at the Malaspina Gymnasium. Over 115 girls participated in last weeks volleyball camp. Coaches and players are thrilled with the growth in these summer camps.

 

 

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL  ****************************************

 

29/03/05- VOLLEYBALL TEAM  ACTIVE IN COMMUNITY
 Members of the Mariner Men's Volleyball Team are involved in several community events.
Graham Sigalet is working with Rob Barcelos coaching the Juvenile Boys team, which has 3 recruits who are coming to MAL next year.
Ben Rahier, Jeremy Semple, Kyle Murphy, and Jeff Barth are working with Chris Carlos coaching the Bantam Boys team. " Its great having the guys coach and give back to the sport that has given them so much" remarks Chris Densmore.
  A 8 week program for kids ages 9-12 in the fall of next season is in the planning process.  It is a Volleyball Canada and Volleyball BC sponsored program that encourages young children to get out learn the fundamentals of volleyball while also having fun playing. 

The goal of the program is to get kids interested in Volleyball at a younger age.
An Intersquad match is planned for April 6th during play at the Dover Bay Grade 8 Volleyball league.

27/01/05- Riley Kaminski BCCAA Player of the week

Congratulations to Riley on being recognized by the league as a top performer.
This weekend Riley helped lift the Mariners to a 3-0 victory over COTR and a 3-1 victory over OUC.   Along the way Riley compiled 17 kills, 5 blocks, 4 aces and 14 digs. In addition to these league stats, Riley passed a 2.3 and served an impressive1.8 to go along with his 4 aces.   With both matches being important in the playoff chase, it was great to see Riley step up and play his best matches of the year.   His statistics show how well rounded his performance was this weekend.   
" Riley is deserving of this award because as a 1st year athlete he continues to improve every weekend and is helping the Mariners improve as a team and achieve their goals" commented coach Chris Densmore

Riley's Bio ..... moved to Nanaimo from Estevan Saskatchewan to attend school at Vancouver Island University.   Last year Riley red shirted for the National Champion U of S Huskies.   In his grade 10 year of club volleyball, Riley was named Midget Player of the Year in SVA.   Riley also helped lead his Juvenile Club team to a Provincial Gold Medal in 2002-2003.   Riley is a verbal leader for the Mariners this year and thrives on situations where the pressure is on and the game is on the line..


04/01/05- MEN'S VOLLEYBALL GO 5-0 IN TOURNEY


Malaspina faced Camuson in the finals with the Mariners winning 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23). In third place with a record of 2-3 was Grant MacEwan from Alberta.

08/11/04- Men's Volleyball has a new record
On friday, November 5th Ben Rahier had 10 blocks to break the old record of 9 set by Rob Barcelos almost 4 years ago to the date (Nov 3, 2000). Jeff Barth recorded 27 kills on Oct 30 vs Capilano the current record is 32 but that was using the old side out scoring system where games could go on indefinitely.

 

 

 

 

 

01/12/04- Jeff Barth BCCAA Athlete of the Week

Jeff is in his 2 nd year with the Mariners. A graduate of Mt. Boucherie Secondary in Kelowna, this 6'4" athlete has returned as one of two captains on the Mariner squad. He is a recipient of many high school and all-star awards and is an outstanding student.

This past weekend, Jeff and his Mariners were at home against the newest volleyball member in the BCCAA, the UCFV Cascades.   On Friday night, the Mariners defeated UCFV 3-0 with set scores of 25-18, 25-21 & 25-17. Jeff has picked up his blocking and serving in the past few weeks to help push the Mariners to an 8-2 record and 2 nd place in the BCCAA.

He recorded 11 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace & 1 dig.   

 

 

 

 

29/11/04- Alumni Games!!
A great time was had by all in the annual alumni volleyball weekend.
The men's team enjoyed some golf followed by a BBQ and the match. Both alumni teams were defeated, although the womens teams battled it out to a fifth game.

16/09/04- Men's Volleyball open with a win !
Wednesday night was the first match of the year for the 2004/05 Mariners Men's Volleyball team.   The Mariners were matched up against their long time rival, the Camosun Chargers.   The first game started rather slowly with both teams making some nervous first game errors.   The Mariners took charge of the game with some consist tough serving and some exceptional passing.

27/07/04 - Men's Volleyball 2004-05 update

The 2004/05 Mariners will consist of a group of athletic players that have played many positions which will produce some creativity on the court with the different line-ups that we can use.   The group of athletes that have been put together for the 2004/05 season will be successful not only because they are talented, but more importantly because they are team players that know what it takes to win and what it means to be part of a team. 16/05/05- GOLF IN BCCAA 
Golf is back in the BCCAA !! After several years in limbo golf will have league play in the BCCAA next season.

Seven teams will be competing at tournaments throughout the province.

Malaspina's Athletic Director can be credited for being the driving force in bring back BCCAA Golf.

This past weekend the Mariner Golf team competed at the Duncan Amateur held at the Duncan Meadows Golf Course.

Kyle Hewitt shot a 71 and a 78 to place 11th .... teamate Mark Kitts shot a 72-78 to place 12th out of a field of 110 players.

 

 

 

 

 

10/06/05- MARINERS PLACE NINTH AT THE RCGA

                                                                           CHAMPIONSHIPS !!!

Twenty men's teams and 11 womens teams were competing at the 2005 RCGA College and Universities Championships at Duncan Meadows June 6-10.
T he Marines survived the third day cut and went on to score 1227 one shot better that Camosun ... which is all that really matters !!

A solid performance by the M's placed them ninth with Mark Kitts leading the Mariners with a four round total 302. 
Not surviving the cut were teams like McMaster, U of Toronto, U of Alberta, Carleton ...

 

 

 

20/04/05- GOLF TEAM IN ACTION
The M's placed fifth out of 13 colleges in a tournament held in Skagit Valley, Washington on April 24-25.

Kyle Hewitt had the best individual score with a two day total of 158.
Brodie Williams and Mark Kitts were not far behind with a 161.
The winning score was 147.
The team score was 651 with the winning score 598 by the hosts Skagit Valley.
Next tournament for the Mariners will be Duncan Amateur at the end of May and then the RCGA (Royal Canadian Golf Association) Championships the first weekend in June. Both events will be held at the Duncan Meadows Course.

 


19/10/04- Golf team results from Victoria

The Golf team was on the road again. This weekend in Victoria they shot their best team score (587) of the year which was good enough for second. Kyle hewitt placed second in the individual scoring ...shooting a outstanding 67 followed by a 74 for a 141 score only one stroke from the leader. 

18/10/04-   NICK ROSE places second at Nationals
Nick Rose was on his way to winning a national title when mother nature denied him the title.
Nick was trailing by a stroke after day two, but on day three was four stokes up when the greens became submerged in water. Play was cancelled and Nick settled for silver and the team placed fifth overall.

04/10/04- Back to back wins for Golf Team

A solid 35 stroke win over second place Douglas has earned the Mariners another tournament title. This past weeekend four team competed at the Nanaimo Golf Club. Nick Rose took top honors (143) in the individual standing with teammate Brodie Williams one stoke behind for second. Next week the team departs for the CCAA National Championships in Niagra Falls.

27/09/04- Mariner Golf Wins Tournament!!

The Golf team had an impressive start to the season with a 25 stroke win at the UCFV golf invitation held at the ledgeview course in Abbotsford. Seven BCCAA schools participated in this two day event. Nick Rose won the low gross shooting a 150.
Next event will be held at the Nanaimo Golf Club Oct 2-3.

OUTSTANDING PLAYER OF THE YEAR FOR BASKETBALL BC
Jason has just been named Basketball BC Outstanding College Player of the year.

He will receive his award at  the 2005 Basketball Hall of Fame and Award banquet in Richmond on April 23rd

 


21/03/05- BRONZE MEDAL  AT NATIONALS!!
After a first round loss to Humber the Mariners went undefeated, winning the next three.

They even defeated Humber in the end 69-61 after playing the Bronze Medal Qualifying game four hours earlier that same day.
The team was also recognized for its fair play and sportsmanship. They won the 2005 CCAA Basketball Fair Play Award !!
Jason Hubbs was named to the Tournament First All-Star team. He was player of the game 3 of the 4 games.

A huge win over Capilano in their own gym placed Malaspina in the finals against Cariboo. Mal played a great game but lost 71-63. Jason Hubbs and Jordan Kinakin were named to the All-Star team.

26/02/05- MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH!!

With a win over Capilano on saturday night the Mariners will be playing at the provincials this Thursday at Capilano College in North Vancouver . They will face UNBC Timberwolves at 3:30pm.

22/11/04- Mariner Basketball BIG wins!!
A solid weekend on the road produced two big victories for the Men's Basketball team. Friday the M's had little trouble defeating Kwantlen by 33 points (97-64) and then on Saturday they knocked off the mighty Douglas Royals 82-73. Jason Hubbs played an incredible game contributing 35points.
This improves the M's record to 3-3. They continue life on the road this weekend in Victoria against Camosun.

 

 

 

12/10/04- Basketball at Capilano Tournament
Preseason basketball action heated up during the thanksgiving weekend at the 10 th annual Blues Classic Basketball tournament at Capilano College in North Vancouver. The Mariner Men's Basketball team matched up against some of the toughest competition in the BCCAA with a draw that included the host team Capilano College, Douglas College, and Kwantlen College. for more ....

 



25/08/04- Late signing adds depth to men's basketball team
 
The Mariner Men's Basketball Team would like to announce the signing of Beaverton Oregon, USA product Richard Boyland. Boyland a 6'0" guard comes the M's after taking some time away from the game. Richard will be entering into BCCAA competition as a freshman after red-shirting his first year of college with Yakima Valley Community College (NWAACC) in Yakima Washington USA. "Richard is an impressive athlete who will bring explosiveness and the ability to pressure the ball to the point guard position." says Coach Warnick, "he (Richard) will be able to make an impact right away and help our team at both ends of the floor with his energy and speed"

The 2004-2005 Mariner Men's Team promises to be an exciting squad, with a blending of old and new faces.   The M's spent this off-season securing local recruits and bringing some proven veterans back into the fold.

15/04/04 - LOCAL ALL-STAR COMMITS TO MARINER'S

  The Mariner Men's Basketball Team is pleased to announce the commitment of Wellington Secondary Guard HENRY BUI.   "We are very excited to have Henry committed to playing for the Mariner's this upcoming season." says Head Coach Todd Warnick.   "Henry is a player of tremendous heart and potential we are looking forward to seeing what he can accomplish," says Warnick.  

   In his past season with the Wildcats of Wellington Henry Bui had an outstanding year which including helping his team to a Silver Medal finish at the Island Championships and earning a birth at the BC High School Provincials. Henry was also named to the Provincial All-Star team as well as a First Team Island All-Star where he captured the game MVP.

09/02/05- Jessica Vogt BCCAA Athlete of the Week and sets new Mariner rebound record !!

Jessica has been recognized by the league as a top performer this past weekend.
Jessica is a rookie post with great potential.
This past weekend she got her first opportunity to start at the college level and turned in two stellar performances. On Friday she pulled in an astounding 19 rebounds to go along with 11 points and 3 assists vs UNBC. 19 rebounds is an all time Malaspina Mariner single game record.

On Saturday vs. UCC Jessica started her second game and played another solid game. She scored 7 points and had 9 rebounds against a very strong Sun Demons defense.

Jessica has worked very hard at improving her game since joining the Mariners from Dover High School in Nanaimo. We are looking forwards to her continued success ..... the rest of the season and several more to come.

03/03/04 -  MARIA KIRKBRIDE
BCCAA BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
The BCCAA announced its annual basketball awards today ! Congratulations to Maria Kirkbride on being named 2004 rookie of the year. Maria was a force in the key hauling down 150 rebounds over the season averaging 8.33 a game to place sixth in the league leaders.

Krystal Hawksworth is a first team All-Conference All-Star and wins the BCCAA scoring title averaging 21 points a game. She also placed second in the assists category averaging 5 per game. Well done Krystal.
