17/03/10 - ONCE AGAIN VIU IS THE TOP ATHLETIC PROGRAM !!
For the fourth consecutive year the VIU Mariners have won the Provincial BCCAA Aggregate title.
The Aggregate Champion is the institution with the most accumulated points by each of the teams they field over the course of the competitive season.
VIU won silver medals in women's volleyball, men's basketball, badminton and men's soccer. A bronze medal went to women's basketball and for the first time in many years all Mariner teams qualified for provincials.
It was extremely close between VIU and UBC-Okanagan, just a few points made the difference.
Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches !!

15/03/10 - VIU defeats HUMBER but drop next two
A solid win over Humber was followed by a loss to UBC-Okanagan and MacEwan eliminating any medal hopes. Lindsay McLoughlin was named a second team tournament all-star !!

08/03/10 - VIU MEN SETTLE FOR SILVER AND DENIED THE WILDCARD!!
The VIU had a solid lead in the 3rd quarter, but UNBC got hot and VIU got cold and a 30-8 run for UNBC ended the season for the Mariners. To add further disappointment the M's did not receive a wildcard berth despite being ranked nationally #1 most of the season .... Read more in the NDN

06/03/10 - VIU WOMEN PRODUCE A BRONZE MEDAL!!
A gutsy performance by the VIU Women's basketball team produced a bronze medal at the Provincial Championships. A 63-57 win over the top seeded UNBC Timberwolves saw Richelle Rafnkjelson named player of the game with 18points.

05/03/10 - VIU vs UNBC for Gold and Bronze!!
First up will be the women's game at 1pm. The Mariners face the #1 seeds UNBC Timberwolves for Bronze. At 8pm the VIU men go for gold !! 02/03/10 - PROVINCIAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!
The 2010 BCCAA Provincial Basketball Championships are about to begin !!
On Thursday the VIU women play the first game of the championships at 1pm when they face the Kwantlen Eagles. The VIU men play Friday at 3pm and will play the winner of the UBC O Heat and the Langara Falcons game. Read more in the NDN

At the 2010 provincial volleyball championships our women's volleyball team brought home a silver medal and the men's team placed 4th. Lindsay McLoughlin, Keri Philips, Jacqueline Doleman and Rafal Korkowski were named to the tournament all-star team. Just announce today ...VIU women have received the wildcard berth and will be heading to the Nationals in Quebec. They are seeded 4th and will face the Humber Hawks in the first round.

A battle with Capilano Blues resulted in a 3-0 win for VIU .. The men's team will be playing for bronze as they lost to UFV 3-0. More details

Despite dropping the first game against the host team Camosun Chargers the VIU Women's Volleyball recovered and won 3-1 and now face the Capilano Blues in the semi-finals at 1pm Friday, Feb 26th. Read more in the NNB

The BCCAA has named its 2010 league All-Stars and VIU AThletes Aileen Holder and Krzysztof Orman are on the 1st team while Rafal Korkowski, Jacqueline Doleman and Lindsay McLoughlin made the second team. 22/02/10 - BADMINTON GOLDEN A NEWS FEATURES (video)
Mike Clark and Jenny Aronson won the provincial gold medal in mixed doubles this past weekend. Read more
They went undefeated in a 6 team round robin. Megan Yim took silver in women's singles, losing one match to Douglas College. Mike, Jen and Megan now advance to the national championships in Edmonton Alberta March 4-6.

16/02/10 - BADMINTON AT ITS BEST !!

The best badminton ever to be played in Nanaimo will take place this weekend. Play begins at 11am on Saturday and 9am on Sunday. VIU is in the hunt for a team medal and are currently sitting in the bronze medal position. A strong performance this weekend would assure them of a medal. In the individual event held on sunday Megan Yim, a bronze medalist in the 2008 CCAA Nationals will be competing for a ticket to the 2010 national in Alberta. Other medal hopefuls will be Mike Clark and Jen Aronson in Mixed doubles. It should be a great show of top calibre badminton being played on a feature style stadium court !!

15/02/10 - ALL MARINERS ON HOME COURT
The VIU Mariner Basketball teams had a successful weekend winning all four games on home court setting up a big final weekend of play at UNBC. Our women will be in a showdown for the top spot in the league while the men hope to keep an undefeated streak alive going into playoffs.

Both games on Friday saw the M's develop a fairly healthy lead thoughout the game only to see it disappear towards the end. The men actually trailed by a point in the final minutes after leading by 20pts.

Andrew Kaban had a monster of a game Saturday scoring 32pts !! Richelle Rafnkjelson led the Mariners with 20pts on friday with Kayla Gromme posting 22pts on Saturday. All the stats on CYBERSPORTS
Spectators were treated to performances by the Port Alberni Armada Cheerleading team on Friday night !!

28/01/10 -THE VIU EVENT STAFF ARE THE BEST !!

Last weekend the VIU Mariner event staff enjoyed an evening out together at the Splitsville bowling alley.
Thanks to our events staff and their leader Mike Stefan each weekend the Mariner games run smoothly . All the work the minor officials, announcers, mascots, videographers, cyberstats/dakstats technicians, gate people ....needs to be applauded !!
