VIU Athletics is committed to building champions through academic achievement, athletic excellence and national recognition of our student athletes, teams and programs. We provide our student athlete with all the necessary tools for them to be champions in their sport and life.

Application form

The Athletic Program at Vancouver Island University is directed towards providing students with a relevant personal educational experience via athletic participation and achievement. It is the view of the department that the athletic experience is an integral part of the educational process. The primary concern of our program revolves around academic scholarship and the realization of personal and professional goals of our students and athletes.

The Athletic Program emphasizes the health benefits which are derived from athletic participation in athletic activities and a healthy competitive experience.

Mariner Athletics also recognizes the ability of sport to provide opportunities for socialization and a healthy environment for all students in providing a balanced college lifestyle.

Nanaimo Campus
The Nanaimo campus is located on a spectacular 110 acre site on the lower slopes of Mount Benson, overlooking the city of Nanaimo, Georgia Strait, and the Coast Mountains on the B.C. Mainland. Noteworthy features of the campus include a 294 seat theatre; well-equipped library, gymnasium,a art. studios, and labs; modern mechanic and welding shop facilities; fish hatchery; student residences; two picturesque Japanese gardens donated by Tamagawa University and Okayma Women’s College in Japan; a Museum of Natural History; and the Nanaimo Art Gallery and gift shop.

Housing - On campus
VIU has two on-campus residences. Residences website.There are 189 private suites which are furnished with a single bed, desk and chair, a small refrigerator, and outlets for private telephone and cable TV. Bathrooms re shared between each of two rooms, and dual lock doors provide security and privacy. Each floor is equipped with vending machines, coin operated laundry, payphones, lounges and kitchens.

Housing - Off Campus
Many students find their own room and board. VIU Housing department has lists of available accommodation in the Nanaimo area call 755-8756 or check out their website.

Academics & Athletics
The Mariner Athletic department insists that student athletes make academics their priority. The coaching staff and the academic monitoring support system, as well as the Student Services department, assist student athletes in reaching their full potential. Over the years many Mariner athletes have been recognized by the CCAA as Academic All-Canadians.

Scholarships
Athletics awards a number of scholarships and bursaries for both athletic and academic excellence. Most Mariner athletes are also eligible to apply for funding from B.C. Provincial Sport Organizations. Mariner Athletics is committed to developing its scholarship opportunities for all athletics.


08/01/04 - KEITA SAWADA
AWARDED $1000

Keita is a first year midfielder on the men's soccer team and is studying graphic arts. He received these scholarships for his outstanding achievements as a varsity athlete.
Keita  was presented cheques from Bruce Hunter (Athletic Director) and Bronwyn Jenkins-Deas (Dean of International Education and ESL).

Coaching Staff
Mariner coaches are all fully certified by the National Coaching Certification Program. They are leaders in our community and have been frequently recognized by the BCCAA and the CCAA for their excellence. The Mariner coaching staff is committed to the student athletes and their development as athletes and scholars. The depth of talent in our coaching staff is reflected in the 93/94, 94/95, 95/96, 98/99 and 06/07 "Overall Championship" banners awarded to VIU for the top overall athletic program in British Columbia.
