Lunch Seminar Dec. 9 Addresses Impact of Income Tax Changes

December 4, 2014 - 11:00am

If you’re still wondering how the federal government’s recent changes to Canada’s income tax system affects you and your family, a Vancouver Island University (VIU) economics professor will provide some valuable insight.

Professor William Troost, who teaches economics and has an expertise in labour economics and economic history, will present a short lunchtime seminar on the topic on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 12 noon in Building 250, Room 125.

Titled Income Splitting, Child Payments & Targeted Tax Credits: An Economic Analysis of the Fall Fiscal Update and How it Will Impact You, the session will touch on the changes announced by Finance Minister Joe Oliver in the federal government’s Nov. 12 fiscal update.

“There were quite a lot of changes in the federal fiscal update that will impact families and the broader community,” Troost says. “My talk will explain the changes, distribution of the benefits, discuss the economic ramifications and efficiency, and discuss the political motivations of the tax cuts.”

Families with children under 18 can learn more about the new income splitting allowance, while retirees or those planning to retire can learn about new pension income splitting options.
