Update on Incident at VIU Nanaimo Campus

UPDATE ON INCIDENT AT VIU NANAIMO CAMPUS
 
Update at 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 9, 2014
 
Earlier today, the Nanaimo RCMP responded to a bomb threat at Vancouver Island University’s International High School in Building 350 at the Nanaimo Campus. A call was placed to the High School’s dispatch line at approximately 4 pm, by a person who indicated there was a bomb in that building. The staff person who took the call contacted Campus Security who then immediately alerted the RCMP.
RCMP arrived a short time later with a Police Services dog and completed a search. Nothing of concern was found. The investigation is continuing and the Nanaimo RCMP are asking anyone with information on this call or incident to contact them at 250-754-2345 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. The Nanaimo RCMP have credited VIU staff and security personnel who attended the scene and moved quickly to respond to the incident.
 
This incident is a reminder to all students, faculty and staff to ensure they are familiar with VIU’s Emergency Procedures. For any emergency, including a bomb threat, persons at VIU’s Nanaimo Campus should:
 
•             Call the Campus Emergency Number at 6600 from any office or any internal phone
•             Call 250-740-6600 from any pay phone
•             Push the button from any Code Blue Pole or Yellow Call Box
•             If you dial 911 directly, you MUST also report the emergency to the Campus Emergency Number
