A Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) designation establishes and expands your credibility as an ESC practitioner. It sets you apart as a certified professional who can provide expertise to design and evaluate erosion and sediment control plans, to influence public policy and land-use planning decisions, and to educate others in sound approaches for preventing off-site impacts from land development activities.
The CPESC program is designed for individuals actively involved in the following ESC activities:
- Development and review of permits
- Design and review of ESC and drainage plans
- Installation and inspection of ESC practices
- Related activities (e.g., assisting regulators, authoring handbooks, educating the public)
CPESC Inc. has developed standards and procedures for certifying persons qualified to practice in the field of erosion & sediment control. CPESC Inc. certifies individuals based on a thorough examination and review of one’s education, scientific and services activities in both the public and private sector.

Class: 1.0 day; Field: no field session(s)
The CPESC Exam Review course provides an overview of the “Canadian” (metric) version of the CPESC exam.
Upon successful completion of the one-day session, participants will be able to:
- Identify applicable Canadian federal, provincial and municipal regulations and permits
- Identify and contrast common practices for erosion and sediment control
- Identify CPESC exam characteristics and time management issues
- Identify and contrast factors influencing erosion and runoff
- Calculate basic models for predicting soil loss
- Identify and contrast specific applicable legislation

Please note: the Canadian version will include a review of:
- Canadian (federal) erosion and sediment control regulations; ethics; code of practice;
- Site Planning: Low Impact Designs, ESC Construction Plan, ESC Plan Implementation,
- Erosion Prediction: Soil Loss Factors, Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation
- Runoff Prediction: Hydrologic Cycle; SCS Runoff Equation; Runoff Control Methods
- Erosion Control: Vegetation; Ground Covers; Buffers and Infiltration Methods
- Sediment Control: Management Practices; Sediment Capture Practices; and Treatment Practices.
There are no formal prerequisites to attend the one-day Exam Review course.
Note: This one-day Exam Review provides a very worthwhile review of Exam content and format. However, to achieve success on the CPESC Exam, individuals are strongly advised to acquire additional field experience and complete additional training prior to participating in the CPESC Exam course. Erosion & Sediment Control and Erosion & Sediment Control – Application of Best Management Practices are highly recommended.

The candidate must bring an approved calculator ( www.cpesc.org/cc-policy/calculator.asp), pencil, letter of exam authorization, photo identification and a clear straight edge to the exam site. All needed reference materials and scratch paper will be provided by CPESC, Inc. The following are required for the exam: letter of exam authorization, photo identification, clear straight edge ruler, pencils and eraser. Please note: the following are not allowed in the exam room: cell phones, Personal Digital Assistants (PDA's), portable computers, cameras, audio recording and audio listening devices, other similar electronic devices, books and paper of any kind.
