Overview
The Environmental Monitoring Professional - Certificate Program (EMPCP) is designed to provide leading edge training to environmental monitoring practitioners throughout Canada. The EMPCP is comprised of a series of short (1-3 day) course modules that participants complete over a defined period of time.
Agenda
Certification requires successful completion of ten (10) individual course modules:
- Environmental Monitoring for Construction Projects (NREN 001)
- Environmental Field Techniques for Construction Projects (NREN 002)
- Engineering Principles for Non-Engineers (NREN 003)
- Spill Response and Control (NREN 004)
- Working with Legislation & Regulations (NREN 006)
- Culverts – Design and Installation (NREN 007)
- Erosion & Sediment Control (NRES 002)
- Fish Habitat Restoration – Design (NRFS 005)
- Freshwater Sampling Methods (NRWQ 001)
- Water Quality Monitoring (NRWQ 002)
Course Schedule
Registration
Objectives
Participants successfully complete ten (10) modules to obtain certification. Specifically, upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Define the role and duties of an environmental monitor
- Identify, describe, and work with pertinent legislation
- Conduct fresh water quality monitoring procedures and requirements
- Design, manage and implement a water quality sampling program
- Isolate and manage construction activities within a worksite
- Manage, coordinate, and maintain machine operation within a worksite
- Design, conduct and monitor a fish salvage and isolation program
- Design and perform site and fish habitat restoration
- Conduct erosion & sediment control measures
- Develop worksite isolation plans, spill control and response plans
- Report on monitoring activities
- Manage, operate, and maintain on-site machinery, equipment and tools
- Interpret and implement works from engineering plans, worksite plans, and maps
- Design, conduct and manage a spill response plan
- Design, install and maintain stream crossing structures
Course Completion
In order to qualify for the Certificate of Program Completion, the following criteria must be met:
- 90% attendance;
- Demonstration of practical field skills;
- Completion of tests of program knowledge, requiring a minimum of 70%; and
- Completion of the practical field checklists, requiring a minimum of 80%.
Prerequisites
No formal requirements at this time.

Field
- Appropriate field work clothing (note: Please avoid tight-fitting jeans and consider bringing extra socks and a second pair of pants)
- Chestwaders
- Sturdy footwear (heavy soled work boots and waterproof boots, steel shank in sole desirable but not required)
- Sturdy raingear (pants and jacket)
- Hat
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- Work gloves
- Safety glasses
- Hi-vis vest
- Flagging tape
- Lunch
- Water or beverage
