Course Description:

A comprehensive three-day applied overview of skills, abilities and procedures required for effective erosion and sediment control planning, construction and maintenance. The three-day course introduces participants to the theory and practice of erosion and sediment control via in-class lectures and exercises (1.0 day), and numerous field exercises (2.0 days). Participants will spend considerable time in a field-based practicum planning, constructing, evaluating and maintaining erosion control structures and products for a wide variety of applications.

Who Should Attend?

Individuals interested in or working with erosion and sediment control initiatives, including: industry consultants (e.g., environmental, forestry, fisheries, agriculture, geological, engineering, integrated), land developers, government (municipal, regional, provincial, federal) personnel (e.g., Ministry of Transportation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada), industry (e.g., gas and oil companies, forest licensees, mining and exploration firms, telecommunications companies, agriculture), and first nations.

You Supply:

Classroom

  • Calculator
  • Pen and pencil

Field

  • Appropriate field work clothing (note: Please avoid tight-fitting jeans and consider bringing extra socks and a second pair of pants)
  • Sturdy footwear (heavy soled work boots and waterproof boots, steel shank in sole desirable but not required)
  • Sturdy rain gear (pants and jacket)
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Clinometer
  • Pointed-tip digging shovel (with 4-5' long wooden handle)
  • Pulaski (not required if flying to course location)
  • 3-5m steel retractable measuring tape
  • 3 lb sledge hammer (short handle)
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Hi-vis vest
  • Flagging tape
  • Lunch
  • Water or beverage
