Course Descriptions – Adult Basic Education [ABE]

 

Mathematics

Intermediate Mathematics (MATH 030)

Topics include: a review of decimals and fractions; ratio and percent; measurement, including the metric system, geometry; consumer math topics and an introduction to algebra. Prerequisite: Math 020 (minimum B grade).

Introductory Algebra 11 (MATH 041)

An introduction to algebra designed to prepare student for MATH 047.  Suitable for students with no previous knowledge of algebra and for those who need to review before entering MATH 047. Prerequisite:  MATH 030 (min. C+).  Satisfies the Math requirement for the Adult Graduation Diploma.

Principles of Math 11 – (MATH 047)

This advanced level algebra course is a prerequisite for many post secondary programs. Satisfies the math requirement for the Adult Graduation Diploma. Topics include: fractional and radical expressions and equations; graphing linear, quadratic functions, and trigonometry. Prerequisites:  MATH 041 (min. C+).

Science

Biology 12 (BIOL 067)

A general overview of cell biology, biochemistry, generics and human biology. Topics include prokaryotic and eucaryotic cells, cellular respiration, gene expression photosynthesis and human anatomy and physiology. Prerequisite – BIOLOGY 11 or CHEMISTRY 11 recommended.

Chemistry 11 (CHEM 047)

A general overview of chemistry based upon atomic theory and structure. Topics include: measurement and significant figures, chemical equations and reactions, pH and an introduction to the mole. Prerequisite: Math 041 or Placement Test.
