Annual Counsellor Check-in Day !

On May 4th, 2012 we will be hosting our annual Counsellor Check-in event. We will host a day of activity that will include:

  • a tour of the campus for 1st time attendees
  • mini-sessions focused in a selection of program areas
  • a review of our annual calendar of events
  • Lunch provided by our Culinary Institute and Q&A with Advising, Disability Services and Financial Aid and Awards

March 7th Psychology Club Conference (open to High School students)

The Psychology Club at Vancouver Island University is hosting a Mini-Conference on March 7th on the Nanaimo campus, and we are pleased to extend an invitation to our local senior secondary students enrolled in Psychology as part of their high school degree. The theme of the conference is 'The Future of Psychology', and will include a key-note speaker, poster presentations and information regarding post-secondary psychology. Students will have the chance to speak with undergraduate student coordinators of research labs in the department and get a feel for what being involved in undergraduate university-level research entails. Registration and Admissions

Deadlines are approaching for the following programs:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing – February 29, 2012
- Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Business Administration – March 31, 2012

For up to date information on other program application deadlines, refer to the Program Availability List: www.viu.ca/pal/index.asp.

Registration for new VIU students is scheduled for mid-May. To confirm registration for the Fall 2012/Spring 2013 academic year, a $200 deposit is due on June 15, 2012.

Financial Aid & Awards

VIU President’s Entrance Scholarships for Vancouver Island High School Students (including Powell River)

Information was mailed to all Vancouver Island and Powell River high school principals in November, followed up with an informational e-mail to Vice-Principals, Counsellors and Career Centers at each of the schools. Attached to the e-mail was the selection criteria guidelines, established in consultation with Nanaimo area Counsellors. Please use this guide to determine your top academic student – if he or she selects VIU as their school of choice, they will qualify to receive this entrance scholarship. The School Selection/Principal’s Endorsement form will be on-line at www.viu.ca/financialaid/applications.asp by March 1, 2012. Completed Endorsements must be received in the Financial Aid & Awards Office by April 30, 2012.

VIU Chancellor’s Entrance Scholarships for top Aboriginal Students

As above, information has been sent to all high school contacts, along with the guidelines for selection. Selection/Endorsement form will be on-line by March 1, 2012 and must be submitted by April 30, 2012.

VIU Entrance Scholarships and Awards

Applications for VIU’s “general” Entrance Scholarships and Awards will be available on-line at www.viu.ca/financialaid/applications.asp by mid-January, with a submission deadline of March 15th.

Timetable of university courses for Fall/Spring will be up by late April. New students can then pick and timetable their course selections and save that plan for their official registration date/time.

Disability Services

Disability Services will be hosting Information Sessions at VIU on the last Friday of the month from October 2011 to August 2012. The sessions will be held in Building 200, room 219 from 9:30-10:30. This is an opportunity for students with disabilities and their families to find out about the documentation required for post-secondary, the services available through our department and possible sources of funding. Please RSVP to disabilityservcies@viu.ca.

VIU Residences

VIU Residences offer student accommodation in three types of housing, traditional dormitories, 20 bed style houses and apartments. Each room is single occupancy and shares a bathroom with someone of the same gender. Students who live in residence get the opportunity to interact with other students from around the world and outside of their program area, while only steps away from the Nanaimo campus! Residence Life offers services and events that you won’t find off campus.

If you are planning on attending VIU and would like to live in residence, apply for both at the same time to avoid disappointment.

Tours are conducted through the Communications & Public Relations department out of the Welcome Center. If you would like to arrange a campus tour, please email cu@viu.ca or call (250) 753-3245 ext. 4611.

Counsellor Packages and Additional Materials

Counsellor packages will be sent out in the Fall to all high schools in BC. If you would like to request an extra counsellor package or additional materials, please contact Joanna Hesketh at Joanna.Hesketh@viu.ca or call (250) 740-6560.
