Tourism Studies Diploma
Our two-year diploma program focuses on studying tourism and its relationship to communities, the environment and economic systems. The program emphasizes the study of tourism from a perspective of community development and the management of natural resources. Students will focus on understanding the social and cultural setting in which tourism attractions are located as well as on understanding the relationship between tourism and sustainable development, with an awareness of environmental issues.
The Faculty in the Tourism Studies program has practical experience in the field and values student-centered education. We strive to give every student in the program a quality experience through small group work, individual and group instruction, the use of current technology and attention to individual learning styles. Students also benefit from application of classroom learning through Co-operative Education placements.
Students who complete the diploma program may choose to build on their entry level skills by completing VIU's Degree in Tourism and Recreation Management. Students apply to the third year of the degree program to complete a Bachelor of Tourism Management. This Degree program focuses on the development of management and entrepreneurial skills needed for people wishing to assume greater responsibilities within an organization, or for those wishing to start new enterprises.
Both the Diploma and the Degree are offered in a Co-operative Education format. In the diploma program, students will spend four academic semesters with us and fulfill the requirements of two paid Co-op placements.
Our program is offered at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. If you are interested in having your prior learning assessed for credit towards the program, please contact the Advising Centre.
If you are interested in applying to the program please find further information on our Admissions web page or contact the program advisor, Sharon Kelly.
