Can I complete the diploma programs or degree program part-time?
Yes, many of our students, for various reasons, choose to complete their studies part-time. It should be noted that core courses are offered in specific semesters (Fall/Spring) and electives are rotated every year.
I am an adult student, (over 19 and out of school for minimum one year) do I still require a C in Math 11 and a C+ in English 12?
Yes, we require that all of our students meet these requirements. Students who do not have these credentials can enroll in VIUs’ ABE programs to upgrade and receive equivalencies. If a potential student does not hold a high school diploma, they can receive the equivalent of a diploma by successfully writing the GED exam. Please see Vancouver Island University Student Services for more information.
When can I apply for the Recreation and Tourism Management Programs?
Applications for all our programs are accepted from November 1 to March 31, each year.
Please note: Applications received after March 31 will be considered late and may not be reviewed by the department. Applications that are not complete (do not have all required paperwork) will not be forwarded to the department for review. Prospective students can apply online, in person, or by mail.
I completed a diploma at another institution. Will it be accepted at Vancouver Island University?
Entrance into the Tourism Management Degree program, requires a diploma in either Recreation, Tourism, or relevant field. If you have successfully completed a diploma in Recreation or Tourism, you will be eligible for our third year. If your diploma is from another field, please contact the department chair to discuss eligibility. Please note that if you did not complete an accounting or economics in your diploma, you may be required to take these as electives in your first year at VIU.
I have completed some post secondary classes, can I receive credit for these in your programs?
That depends. Most of our courses are specific to the field of recreation and Tourism. The diploma programs (Recreation and Sport Management/Tourism Studies) do not offer much room for outside electives. Our degree program, however, requires outside electives and is more open to transfer courses. Please contact the department chair to review the specific courses.
