VIU Internal Application Deadline
Students are to hand in a hard copy of their applications by TBD* to Kathryn Jepson at the Research & Scholarly Activity Office, Building 305 Room 446. See How to Apply for further instructions regarding the application process.
*This deadline applies to you if:
- You are currently registered in a degree program at VIU (or were registered at during the year of application);
- You are on an approved leave of absence from VIU;
- You are not currently registered at a university and you graduated from a degree program at VIU during the year of application (January to December 2011); or
- You have completed your degree program and are registered in courses at VIU.
- You are in a master's program at VIU and will not have completed more than 12 months of full-time graduate studies at the proposed start date of the award.
All other applicants are to apply directly to SSHRC by December 15, 2011.
Which Students are Eligible to Apply?
Subject Matter: Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Master’s Scholarship proposals may involve any disciplines, thematic areas, approaches or subject areas eligible for SSHRC funding. Please see Subject Matter Eligibility for more information.
To qualify to apply to this funding opportunity, you must:
- be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
- be applying for support to pursue your first graduate degree (i.e., master's or equivalent) and not have completed more than 12 months of full-time graduate study at the proposed start date of the award (all previous studies at the graduate level, regardless of discipline, will be included in determining eligibility);
- have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent;
- not have already received an award for master's-level study from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR; and
- not be applying for graduate funding in the 2011-12 academic year to NSERC or CIHR.
Notes:
At the time of application, you need not be assured admission to a particular university or to a degree program.
Eligibility of Degree Programs: The scholarship is tenable only in degree programs that include significant research training. Research training normally involves:
- demonstrating the ability to conduct original research by the completion of a thesis, major scholarly paper, project, publication, performance, recital or exhibit; and/or
- completing course work in research methods and/or statistics appropriate for the discipline or field of study; and/or
- acquiring knowledge and experience sufficient to conduct, assess and interpret
research and scholarship in the field.
How to Apply
To apply follow the instructions below:
- Sign up for the SSHRC Scholarship Information Session - Thursday, October 13, 2011, 3:00pm to 4:30pm in building 305 room 444. To register e-mail Kathryn Jepson.
- Read the SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program Master’s Scholarships web page.
- Login and/or register as a new user on the SSHRC Registration & Login web page.
- Once logged in select Create New Form.
- Look for Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships
- Master's, select the application instructions icon
to view the application instructions. Print the instructions so that you
may refer to them when you are completing your application. - Select the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master's link to start your application.
- Once you have completed your application press the Verify button to ensure all fields have been completed.
- Print a copy of your application to review. It is highly recommended that you seek out a faculty member to review your full application (with attachments) to check your grammar and provide you with feedback.
- Seek out two potential referees and arrange a meeting or e-mail them and ask if they can each complete a Letter of Appraisal for your application. E-mail or give them a hard copy of your application. Send them the link to the fillable .pdf Letter of Appraisal Form. Collect their 'Letters of Appraisal' in a signed sealed envelope.
- "Referees should be faculty members who have had sufficient opportunity to assess your potential and, if applicable, the importance of your publication venues." (SSHRC)
- E-mail or hand deliver a hard copy of your application to your department Chair. Send the Chair the link to the fillable .pdf Departmental Appraisal Form to complete. Collect the Department Appraisal form from the Chair in a sealed signed envelope.
- If the Chair of the department completed a Letter of Appraisal for you then the Chair will have to find a designate to complete your Departmental Appraisal.
- Transcripts: SSHRC has given us permission to submit your Unofficial VIU Transcript. There is no need to purchase a transcript from the Registrar's Office. Your Unofficial Transcript will be printed off at the Research & Scholarly Activity Office when you hand in your full application. If applicable, other university transcripts must be Official (handed in at the time of application in a sealed envelope).
- Deliver your full application including all attachments and transcripts to Kathryn Jepson at the Research & Scholarly Activity Office, Building 305 Room 446 by 4:00pm January 5, 2012.

Review Procedures & Selection Process
Your application will be reviewed by VIU's SSHRC Scholarship Selection Committee. If your application is chosen to compete in the national competition then you will be notified via e-mail by Kathryn Jepson. The Committee might make suggested revisions to improve your application; If applicable, you will have a short period of time to make these revisions before your application is forwarded to SSHRC by the institutional deadline of February 2, 2012.

If your application is forwarded to SSHRC, recipients selected to receive a scholarship will be notified by SSHRC in mid May.
