Capital

$477,713 was given to students for research awards, salaries & honorariums (internal & external funds).
Approx. 155 students received salaries/honorariums as a result of research activities at VIU.
36 students received research scholarships, awards & internships (internal & external funds).
1 student awarded a NSERC Post Graduate Scholarship (PGS).
1 student awarded a CIHR Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship.
1 incoming student bringing a SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship Master’s Award (The first SSHRC student award at VIU).

$ 3,808,934 - Total external research funding received in fiscal year 2010/2011 (not including endowments or student research).
$ 520,263 - Funds put into building institutional research capacity.
$ 1,254,772 - Operating funds received.

Dr. Sarah Dudas, was appointed as a new Canada Research Chair in Shellfish Aquaculture Ecosystems Interactions.
Dr. Sarah Dudas also received just over $300,000 equipment for her research from CFI and BCKDF.
Dr. David Gaumont-Guy received over $100,000 from CFI and BCKDF to purchase equipment to study carbon sequestration of green roofs.
Drs Chris Gill and Erik Krogh received five years of funding from NSERC to study new application of membrane induction mass spectometry. Related research is funded through a contract with StatOil.
Dr. Nicole Vaugeois received a research contract with Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada to look at ammenities-based rural development.
VIU received its first allocation of SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Scholarships in which VIU can nominate up to five graduating students to receive funding for graduate school.
Sarah Marshall, a Masters of Education student, is VIU's first graduate student to hold a SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Scholarship.
VIU hosted visits by Dr. Chad Gaffield, President of SSHRC and by Isabelle Blain, Vice-President of NSERC.
