The Senate of Vancouver Island University is governed by the University Act. The Senate was fully constituted in January of 2009.
The Senate conducts its business through the following six Standing Committees:

- Planning & Priorities Committee

- Bylaws, Policies & Procedures Committee
- Elections Committee
Standing Committee Membership Distribution
Curriculum Committee
- Members: President (ex-officio, non-voting); Vice-President Academic; Associate Vice-President Academic (ex-officio, non-voting); 1 Faculty member from each Faculty (elected from Faculty); 1 Support Staff member (elected from Support Staff); 1 Student (elected from Senate); 1 Dean (elected from Senate); 1 Faculty member (elected from Senate).
- Non-Voting Resource Persons: Information Technology rep; Advising rep; Library rep; Admissions Manager; Calendar Editor; Registrar; Administrative Coordinator, Curriculum Development.
Planning & Priorities Committee
- Members: President (ex-officio, non-voting); Vice-President Academic; 1 Faculty member from each Faculty (elected from Senate); 1 Student (elected from Senate); 1 Support Staff member (elected from Senate); 1 Dean from each Faculty; 1 Regional Campus Faculty Representative (elected from Senate).
- Non-Voting Resource Persons: Information Technology rep; Director, Library; Director, University Planning and Analysis; Provost and Vice-President, Administration & Finance; Regional Campus Principals (Cowichan & Powell River).
Educational Standards Committee
- Members: President (ex-officio, non-voting); Vice-President Academic; Associate Vice-President Academic (ex-officio/non-voting); 1 faculty member from each Faculty (elected from Faculty); 1 Support Staff member (elected from Support Staff); 1 Student (elected from Senate); 1 Dean (elected from Senate); 1 Faculty member (elected from Senate); Registrar.
- Non-Voting Resource Persons: Admissions Manager; International Admissions Manager; Advising rep; Financial Aid & Awards rep; Executive Director, Student Services.
Awards & Honours Committee
- Members: President; Senate Vice-Chair; 5 Faculty members (elected from Senate); 1 Student (elected from Senate); 1 Support Staff member (elected from Senate; 1 Dean (elected from Senate).
Bylaws, Policies & Procedures Committee
- Members: University Secretary; Senate Vice-Chair; 3 Senate representatives (elected from Senate).
Elections Committee
- Members: Registrar; Administrative Coordinator, Senate; 1 Faculty member (elected from Senate).
