Information Sheet for Passports and Youth Works

To Redeem Passports:

  • Students must be registered at Vancouver Island University and registration should be in an academic or career-related program (an apprenticeship program is also acceptable) that would normally be eligible for Canada Student Loan funding.
  • Students who have lost their passport booklet or stamp(s) must submit a Ministry Declaration Form which has been signed by the Principal of their secondary school in lieu of the actual passport stamp(s).
  • At this time students have five years from June 30 of their expected year of graduation in which to redeem their passport awards. Stamps accepted by the University before that date must be received at the Ministry no later that August 31. Expired stamps accepted by the University will not be accepted by the Ministry and will be charged back to the student.
  • Passport stamps will be applied to the student's tuition fees when the student enrolls at a post-secondary institution. If the tuition fees are less than the value of the stamps, students may use the balance towards other educational expenses.
  • Vancouver Island University will be responsible for issuing T4A's to students for the amount of the passport stamps if the accumulated total of the stamps is greater than $500.00.

To Redeem Youth Works Tuition Credit Vouchers:

  • Students must be registered at Vancouver Island University and registration should be in an academic or career-related program (an apprenticeship program is also acceptable) that would normally be eligible for Canada Student Loan funding. Students can be enrolled part-time or full-time.
  • Community youth work experience opportunities range from a minimum 100 hours ($800) to a maximum of 300 hours ($2,400). Through their work experience, participants earn tuition credits at the rate of $8 per hour. Credits are redeemable at the University for tuition costs.
  • NOTE: Tuition costs also includes: fees that a student must pay in order to enroll in and complete credit programming (e.g., recreation/athletic fees, student card fees (for access to library, counseling, and other student services), registration fees, tool rental fees, studio fees, graduation fees, issue of transcripts fees).
  • Student's will receive a Record of Tuition Credit Booklet upon completion of their work project. The Tuition Credits are valid from the date issued and can be redeemed up to five years.
  • At the time of registration or enrollment, the institution will remove the required amount of credits to cover the cost of tuition fees. If the tuition fees are less than the total Record of Tuition credit value, students can redeem the unused credits at a later date. Or if a student has earned $800 in tuition credits and the cost of tuition is $770, the student will receive $30 cash back (in the form of a refund cheque only - NO CASH). Students can ONLY receive up to $99 cash back. Cash-back is only for giving change to the next highest $100.
  • Vancouver Island University will be responsible for issuing T4A's to students for the amount of the tuition credit vouchers if the accumulated total of the stamps is greater than $500.
