Exchange Programs
Iceland, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Alaska and Finland, and more...
- North2North – This exchange program is part of the University of the Arctic consortium. The stipend given to a student is $4000 and that goes towards airfare and cost of living while at the host university. The website www.uarctic.org/north2north , lists the host institutions and also tells you where you can find the application form. A limited number of courses at each university is offered in English.
Mexico, USA
- North American Mobility Program (NAMP) Faculty of Management – Students in the Faculty of Management have access to $3000 to study at one of the partner schools in the USA (Central Arkansas University or California State University) or Mexico (Universidad de Colima or Universidad Juarez Autonoma de Tabasco). Students must be able to study in Spanish if they go to Mexico.
- North American Mobility Program (NAMP) First Nations – First Nations students have access $1500 to study at one of the US partners (University of Montana or New Mexico State University), and $2000 for exchanges to the Mexican partners (Valle del Mezquital or Universidad de Colima) . Students must be able to study in Spanish if they go to Mexico.
Korea
- Chung Ang University – Global Leader Scholarship (for native speakers of English). Students will receive KRW 1,500,000 (approximately $1,380 CDN) per semester and free housing in exchange for 12 hours of cultural and language services per week for 12 weeks of semester. Japan
- Mejiro University – One VIU student can receive the Japanese government scholarship (JASSO) of 80,000 Yen (approximately $895.00 CDN) relocation allowance on arrival and 80,000 Yen monthly stipend.
Summer Opportunities
Korea
- Bahrom International Program (BIP) - Students can take part in an amazing month-long, 3-credit program at our partner school in Korea. The program, accommodation and most meals are free. Students pay a $200US application fee, their own airfare, and for a few gifts.
Mexico
- Spanish and Mexican Culture and Hospitality & Tourism in Mexico – These 6 credit summer programs are offered by our partner in Monterrey, Mexico. VIU students get a reduction of $1,000 in fees because of a tuition waiver.
- Universidad de Colima in Mexico (NAMP). April 26 to August 7, 2010 with a 2-week break from July 12 to 24, 2010. $3000 provided by the North American Mobility Program (NAMP) to cover registration, program fees and housing (this is a government grant and is only available to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants)

Japan
- Miyazaki Summer Language and Culture program – This non-credit program offers students the opportunity to study Japanese language and culture. It is put on for a group of students from a Chinese university but a few VIU students are invited to attend. Miyazaki will waive the cost of the program and accommodation for VIU students (you pay your airfare and meals).
- International Education Stipend of $350, $750 or $1000 given to students who study abroad. Some conditions apply.
- Study Abroad Scholarships: Nine scholarships are available for students who study abroad:
- Student Aid BC – If you are eligible to receive funding through Student Aid BC, then you will likely be able to continue your funding to include study overseas. See the Financial Aid office for information.
