Web Development

"Web development", or the development of materials for publishing on the World Wide Web, includes web page design and authoring, web graphics creation and editing, and developing movies, animations, and special effects for web sites. Click the software program links below for more details and resources.

Programs available for web page/site authoring are Microsoft FrontPage (on all productivity and Media stations), Macromedia Dreamweaver (on the Media stations only), and Adobe GoLive (on the Media stations.) Adobe Acrobat Professional, used to create PDF (Portable Document Format) files for the World Wide Web, is also available on the Media stations.

Programs for web graphics creation and editing are Macromedia Fireworks, Macromedia Freehand, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Paint Shop Pro (available on the Media stations.) As well, an "Intuos3" drawing tablet may be borrowed from the Library Service Desk and used to draw, sketch, or write directly into any of these graphics programs using the accompanying pen or mouse. The tablet may be borrowed for 4 hours at a time by VIU Students and employees (no renewals), and may be taken out of the library. Present your Employee or Student ID card at the Library Service Desk, and quote the tablet's call number, "LTABLET", to borrow the tablet. Instructions are included in the tablet package.

Programs for developing movies, animations and special effects for the web are Macromedia Flash (available on the Media stations) and iMovie 4 (in the video editing suites.)

Web folders for Discovery Accounts . A web folder allows students to make HTML files (i.e. web pages), and other web-based media content, available on the World Wide Web. If you do not have a web folder in your Discovery account, you can create one. If your web directory is not working properly, you can remove it and re-create it.
