WORKSHOPS

Interested in improving your grammar and sentence structure?
Come to our Tuesday afternoon workshops on the fourth floor of the Library. Take the stairs beside Jumpin'Java to Room 458.

Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2:30 - 3:30 Clarity and Concision

Have you ever thought, "That's not what I really meant to say?" Have your sentences become so convoluted and tangled that even you have difficulty sorting out the threads of meaning? Take heart: you are not alone. All writers struggle with clarity and concision. This workshop will help you write sentences that express your ideas clearly and concisely. Readers will thank you; teachers will praise you.

Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2:30 - 3:30 Thesis Statements

In one brief hour this workshop will demystify the thesis statement. After understanding how to craft one, you'll practise writing effective thesis statements. You'll then be able to take this newly-honed skill and write a thesis for your next essay assignment, one you can be proud of.

No workshops during Reading Week.

Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2:30 - 3:30 Parts of Speech

Prepositions - verbs - nouns - adverbs: What are they and why does it matter?

One of the first steps to improving grammar is learning to idenitfy parts of speech. This workshop will help you understand how parts of speech function in a sentence.

Tuesday, March 6, 2:30 - 3:30 Sentence Fragments and Comma Splices

Do you have essays returned with 'Frag" or "CS" written in the margin? This workshop will help you understand what constitutes a fragment and comma splice and how to restructure your writing to create correct sentences.

Tuesday, March 13, 2:30 - 3:30 Sentence Style: Passive to Active Voice

Once you know how to write grammatically correct sentences, you can move on to improving your writing style. Sentences written in the active mode are often a better rhetorical choice than the less direct passive mode. When you learn to master the active mode you'll be able to craft sentences that are vigorous and muscular, qualities that any reader will appreciate. But the passive mode has its place too. You'll learn that meaning and content are determining factors.
