MBAA 501 (2) Foundations 2

A continuation of the foundational literacies required to be successful in the MBA program. Topics include critical thinking, writing skills for graduate students, teams and group work, presentation and communication skills, and a continuation of intercultural learning. (14:0:0 for 2 weeks)

Prerequisite: MBAA 500.

MBAA 511 (1.5) Research 1: Introduction

An introduction to research fundamental concepts, approaches, and methods. Topics include an overview of the research process and defining the business problem, elements of research design including research approaches and methods, secondary data and introduction to data analysis and basic statistical analysis. MBAA 512 (1.5) Economics 1: Introduction

A broad theoretical introduction to economics and how decisions are made by economic agents. These agents include consumers, producers, managers, and all levels of governments. The course spans core concepts in both microeconomics and macroeconomics. MBAA 512 was formerly called PMBA 503; credit will not be granted for both courses. (4:0:0 for 5 weeks)

MBAA 513 (1.5) Marketing 1: Introduction

An introduction to the basic theories and concepts of marketing. The course emphasizes the effective practice for building and maintaining successful customer relationships. Topics include buyer behaviour, ethical marketing, and strategies related to market segmentation, market targeting, brand positioning, product, pricing, distribution, and communication. MBAA 514 (1.5) Management 1: Strategic Management

This course provides an examination of the nature of management and the context of businesses that influences the practice of management and strategic managerial decision making. Topics include environmental and industry factors, value chain, resource-based views of the firm, strategy typologies, organizational structure and decision-making. MBAA 515 (1.5) Finance 1: Finance and Quantitative Analysis

An introduction and review of critical mathematical and statistical techniques used in financial decision-making. Topics include algebra, linear systems, time value of money, and simple calculus, plus the descriptive statistics, mean and standard deviation, and inferential statistics including regression analysis necessary to analyze and draw conclusions about business data. MBAA 516 (1.5) Accounting 1: Basics of Accounting

An introduction to financial accounting basics from a user perspective. The purpose of the course is to provide students with basic accounting principles and concepts needed to improve business decision-making skills. Topics include understanding forms of organizations, basic accounting concepts, and the relationship between and analysis of financial statements. MBAA 521 (2) Research 2: Research Design

An advanced examination of business research to provide research and consulting skills. Topics include developing your ability to recognize the need for research, understanding where and how to gather data, and converting your data into reliable information for business decision-making with a focus on qualitative data. MBAA 522 (2) Economics 2: Microeconomics

An introduction to economic models to address issues around decision-making in business. The student will gain insight into the micro-economist toolboxes and their application in finance, economics, management, sales and more. Topics include pricing strategy, demand, production, cost, profit, and strategic interactions. MBAA 522 was formerly called MBA 504; credit will not be granted for both courses. (4:0:0 for 7 weeks)

MBAA 523 (2) Marketing 2: Strategic Marketing

An applied approach to learning strategic marketing management. Topics include a critical analysis of the marketing environment and examining the marketing decisions required to develop a strategic marketing plan for a product or service. Students will learn to make marketing decisions based on a comprehensive market situation analysis. MBAA 523 was formerly called MBA 566; credit will not be granted for both courses. MBAA 524 (3) Management 2: Leadership and Managerial Skills

An applied development and practice of key managerial skills required to obtain effective performance at the individual, group, and organizational level. Topics include the dynamic role of leadership and managerial practice and skills achieved through leadership of the self and others enhanced by Indigenous perspectives. MBAA 525 (2) Finance 2: Finance Theory and Application

An examination of the role that financial theories and practices play in the financing, internal control and enhancement of value within organizations from the perspective of non-financial managers. Topics include measuring economic value, understanding bond ratings and stock valuation and recommending appropriate capital structure for an organization. MBAA 526 (2) Accounting 2: Context of Accounting

An examination of financial reporting issues and practices for organizational problem-solving and decision-making. Topics include an introduction to corporate governance and ethics, framework of accounting, external financial reporting and analyzing financial statements through ratio analysis. MBAA 527 (2) Technology 1: System Management

An examination of the ways in which organizations use information technology to manage data and processes to inform managerial decisions. Topics include management decision-making related to investment in information technology and the impact of digital network and communications technology on modern business activities and strategies. MBAA 531 (3) Research 3: Data Analytics

An examination of various methods for getting, exploring, and modeling large data sets. The student will gain insight into the data science toolboxes and their application in finance, economics, marketing, human resources, management, sales and more. MBAA 532 (2) Economics 3: Global Context

This course exposes students to theory, application and assessment of the global environment and the international forces that impact business. Topics include the implications and consequences for globalization from international trade policies, foreign direct investment, financing and currency markets, modes of entry, national competitiveness and global risks. MBAA 533 (2) Technology 2: Communication Tools

An introduction to the use of information and communication technologies in order to create new opportunities such as higher productivity, innovation and increased business activity. MBAA 534 (3) Management 3: Strategic Global Talent Management

An analysis of strategic considerations required for the global management of people within the complex international environment including the complexity arising from consideration of global and local perspectives. Topics include managing global and local talent, subsidiary and expatriate roles, and applying HR functions for strategic alignment with the overall corporate strategy. MBAA 536 (2) Accounting 3: Financial Decision Making

An analysis of internal management perspectives and decision-making in business organizations. This includes an examination of operational accounting issues and practices in the context of problem-solving and decision-making in organizations. Topics include understanding management decision and control methods, applying decision-making tools, and understanding budget management and control. MBAA 537 (2) Technology 3: Digital Behaviour

An exploration of the digital landscape as a cultural and social space. Students will learn to assess risk in a real-time environment, distinguish between private and public behaviour and the implications of this in a digital landscape, and build an understanding of the impact that the participatory media consumption has on individuals, societies, and industry. MBAA 542 (2) Economics 4: Advanced Topics in Economics

An introduction to basic notions in incentives and information economics. The course provides a broad coverage of the economic subfields that have emerged in the past decades. Students are introduced to advanced analytical methods while avoiding overly abstract presentation. Topics include game theory, adverse selection, moral hazard, and mechanism design. MBAA 543 (3) Marketing 3: Global Marketing

An analysis and application of international perspectives of the international marketing environment, marketing mix elements and strategies. The course focuses on culture and sub-cultures, entry strategies, market research, ethics, and organizational decisions involved in cross-border marketing. MBAA 544 (3) Management 4: Operations Management

A study of the core decision analysis concepts to develop analytical skills in solving operational issues and problems in the workplace. Topics include process analysis, operations strategy, linear programming models, production planning, forecasting, project management, multicriteria decision analysis, inventory control models, quality management, statistical process control, and supply chain management. MBAA 545 (2) Finance 3: Investment Management and Markets

An examination of the financial markets for equity, debt, and derivative instruments; and their use by corporations in raising capital to finance operations and by institutions and individuals in the management of investment portfolios. Topics include the basics of capital budgeting, cash flow estimation and risk analysis, real options, corporate valuation and mergers and acquisitions. MBAA 547 (2) Technology 4: Emerging Business Technology

An examination of the ways in which organizations evaluate, adopt, and use emerging technologies in order to identify the potential benefits of new technology and determine the feasibility of implementation. Topics include management decision-making related to trends in digital and technology, intelligence, surveillance, and investment in emerging technologies. (2:0:0 for 14 weeks)

MBAA 550 (6) Internship

The internship is designed to enable students to gain supervised practical experience through a placement in a professional business setting. Students will be assigned responsibilities to complete in conjunction with the requirements in MBAA 551. MBAA 550 was formerly called MBA 580; credit will not be granted for both courses. MBAA 551 (6) Research 4: Applied Business Project

A substantial research-based project which will provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills through the investigation and analysis of a complex business problem or management issue that will form the basis of their internship (MBAA 550). MBAA 552 (3) Work Integrated Learning Foundations

This course is designed to provide MBA students with the skills and tools essential to succeed in an internship and plan their career.
