Chancellor Shawn A-in-chut Atleo
Chief Shawn Atleo (A-in-chut) was appointed as Vancouver Island University's first Chancellor effective September 1, 2008, becoming the first university chancellor of aboriginal heritage in the province's history.
A-in-chut is a Hereditary Chief from the Ahousaht First Nation and served as the British Columbia Regional Chief of the Assembly of First Nations before being elected as the National Chief to the Assembly of First Nations.
Chief Atleo graduated in 2003 with a Masters of Education in Adult Learning and Global Change from the University of Technology, Sydney Australia (in partnership with University of British Columbia, University of the Western Cape South Africa, and University of Linkoping Sweden).
His efforts are focused on the empowerment of the people and their communities towards self-determination and building hope for the future. Chief Atleo exercises leadership by first listening to gain an understanding and then working collaboratively to make positive change.
Chief Atleo is also a founding member of the BC First Nations Leadership Council (BCAFN, Union of BC Indian Chiefs and First Nations Summit), which allows all three organizations to collectively work together to protect the interests of First Nations in BC and to ensure that Aboriginal Title and Rights are recognized, accommodated and reconciled through government-to-government relationships.
He was also a participant in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and led a delegation to assist in rebuilding indigenous communities in Indonesia following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and its associated tsunami.
VIU is proud and honoured, to have Chief Atleo serve as our Chancellor.
