ABCO 101T Safe Work Practices

Using theory and practice, identify and apply shop and site safety practices along with personal safety practices. ABCO 101T was formerly called ABCO 114T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

ABCO 102T Documentation and Organizational Skills

Use construction drawings and specifications, interpret building codes and bylaws, plan and organize work and perform trade math (theory and practice in math calculations related to the carpentry trade: fractions, decimals, metric/imperial, percentages, area and volume, ratios/proportions, and board measure calculations). ABCO 102T was formerly called ABCO 118T,ABCO 116T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

ABCO 103T Tools and Equipment

Using theory and practice in identifying, maintaining, and using carpentry related hand tools, portable power tools, and stationary power tools. ABCO 103T was formerly called ABCO 124T,ABCO 122T,ABCO 120T,ABCO 130T,ABCO 140T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

ABCO 104T Survey Instruments and Equipment

Using theory and practice in recording and transferring elevations, optical levels, transits, theodolites and electronic instruments. ABCO 104T was formerly called ABCO 122T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

ABCO 105T Access, Rigging and Hoisting Equipment

Use ladders, scaffolds and access equipment along with rigging and hoisting equipment.

ABCO 107T Concrete Form Work

Using theory and practice in identifying concrete types, materials, additives and treatments; selecting concrete forming systems; building footings and vertical framework; build slab-on grade forms and suspended slab forms; install reinforcement and embedded items; place and finish concrete. ABCO 107T was formerly called ABCO 126T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

ABCO 108T Wood Frame Construction

Using theory and practice to identify shop and construction building materials related to carpentry trade including describing wood frame construction, selecting framing materials, building floor systems, building stair systems, building decks and exterior structures, and building walls/roofs. ABCO 108T was formerly called ABCO 132T,ABCO 134T,ABCO 136T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

ABCO 109T Building Science

Theory of forces acting on a building such as heat and sound transfer principals, air and moisture movements in buildings, methods of controlling forces acting on a building, methods of controlling heat and sound transmission, and methods of controlling air and moisture flow.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Math and Reading assessment.

ABCO 111T Work Experience

Practical examination of performance in use of shop and framing skills. ABCO 111T was formerly called ABCO 113T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

ABCO 112T Construction Math

Theory and pratice in math calculations related to the carpentry trade; fractions, decimals, metric/imperial, percentages, area and volume, rations/proportions and board measure calculations. Credit will only be granted for one of CAFT 112T or ABCO 112T.

ABCO 113T Cultural Applications to Trades

Theory and practice in working on traditional Aboriginal projects. Students will build paddles, and/or drums using traditional methods. Indigenous content in this course is developed in consultation with local Indigenous communities. ABCO 113T was formerly called ABCO 142T,ABCO 111T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

ABCO 120T Hand Tools

Theory and practice in identifying, maintaining, and using carpentry related hand tools. Credit will only be granted for one of CAFT 120T or ABCO 120T.

ABCO 122T Portable Power Tools

Theory and practice in identifying, maintaining and using carpentry related portable power tools. Credit will only be granted for one of CAFT 122T or ABCO 122T.

Theory and practice in describing types of wood frame construction, building foundations, floors, walls, partitions, gable and hip roofs, straight and circular stairs, back framing included in walls, stairs and roofs, and installing pre-fabricated trusses. Credit will only be granted for one of CAFT 132T or ABCO 132T.

ABCO 134T Windows and Doors

Theory and practice in identifying types of windows, and interior and exterior doors, and installing windows and doors. Credit will only be granted for one of CAFT 134T or ABCO 134T.

ABCO 136T Residential Building Renovations

Theory and practice in installing temporary supports, dismantling building components, assessing renovation plans, and reassembling building components.

Essential Aboriginal Construction Courses

ESFB 100T Personal Management Skills

A concentration on personal and professional development skills, including communication and conflict resolution, needed by workers in today's industry. In addition, this course provides the opportunity to study west coast First Nations construction techniques. This study includes the history, cultural sensitivities, and skills needed to perform this work.

ESFB 105T Trades Math

Theory and practice in math calculations related to the trades; fractions, decimals, metric/imperial, percentages, area and volume, ratios/proportions.

ESFB 110T Business Operations

An introduction to customer service. Topics include types of customers, meeting needs, addressing problems, customer communication, and maintaining the relationship; quality management systems; how business works, markets, competitors, business cycles, workplace legislation, union/management labor relations; innovative workplace practices, ethics in the workplace; entrepreneurial skills; and responsibility to community.

ESFB 115T The Emerging Workplace

An introduction to emerging issues related to the trade and business including the impact of environmental and technological change.

ESFB 120T Employment Strategies

Development of employment strategies needed for securing and keeping employment. Topics include resume and employment letter writing, job search techniques, application forms, interview skills, internet employment research, and evaluating job offers.
