CONV 101 (3) Introduction to Tourism

An introduction to the tourism industry. Topics include: tourism terminology; issues and trends in British Columbia; tourism guest characteristics; the eight sectors of the BC tourism industry; key tourism organizations and their influence; impacts of tourism; and tourism related products. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 170, RMGT 170, HOSP 110 or CONV 101. (2:1:0)

CONV 102 (3) Introduction To Special Events Management

An introduction to the planning, implementation, management, and evaluation of festivals and events. Topics include: principles of marketing; assessment of event viability; fund-raising and revenue generation; financial management techniques; human resource and volunteer management; project management; logistics and staging; and risk management. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 190, RMGT 190 or CONV 102. (2:1:0)

CONV 103 (3) Celebrating Community And Culture

An exploration of how communities and cultures within those communities can be effectively included in special events. Topics include: assessing the community environment; communities as assets to special events; socio-cultural impacts of tourism and events; cross-cultural communication; and adding a cultural element to special events. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 153, RMGT 153 or CONV 103. (2:1:0)

CONV 104 (3) Event Volunteer Management

An introduction to concepts and skills for the successful management of event volunteers. Topics include: the value of volunteers; a five-stage approach to the volunteer cycle; role and responsibilities of the event volunteer coordinator; and the event volunteer management process. Credit will only be granted for one of TRMT 450 or CONV 104. (2:1:0)

CONV 105 (3) Event Law and Risk Management

An exploration of legal and risk management issues involved in planning and hosting tourism events. Legal issues and risk management are examined in relation to: human rights; the law of contracts; the law of negligence; food and alcohol; organizational structure; employees and employment standards; trademarks, copyright and licensing, and insurance. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 226, RMGT 226, HOSP 230 or CONV 105. (2:1:0)

CONV 106 (3) Event Marketing

An overview of concepts and tools used to design and implement a successful event marketing strategy. Topics include: planning, implementing and evaluating an event marketing strategy; market research and analysis; establishing marketing objectives; designing a marketing strategy; the communications plan; and using electronic media. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 101, RMGT 101, HOSP 215 or CONV 106. (2:1:0)
