PTEC 220 (2) Technology for Product Distribution

Introduces students to the technology used in the pharmacy to dispense medications. Students apply knowledge in pharmacy case scenarios using pharmacy dispensing software. Accuracy and patient safety are emphasized. Concepts explored in this course provide a foundation for subsequent lab courses in the program. (0:0:30 for 3 weeks)

Prerequisite: Completion of Semester 3 in Pharmacy Technician program (Selkirk College).

PTEC 221 (2) Prescription Dispensing Intake

Provides students the opportunity to simulate dispensing prescriptions in a community practice setting. Students practice the technical aspects of processing prescriptions including inventory management, interpreting prescriptions, performing calculations, documentation, and verification. Students demonstrate effective interpersonal communication and health teaching skills associated with the dispensing process. (0:0:20 for 3 weeks)

Prerequisite: Completion of Semester 3 in Pharmacy Technician program (Selkirk College).

PTEC 223 (3) Institutional Dispensing and Sterile Product Preparation

Allows students to simulate prescription dispensing in a hospital practice setting. Students practice the technical aspects of processing prescriptions including inventory management, interpreting prescriptions, performing calculations, documentation, and verification. Safety, dosage calculations, incompatibilities, sterile procedure, and quality assurance controls are emphasized. (0:0:15 for 6 weeks)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Semester 3 in Pharmacy Technician program (Selkirk College).

PTEC 224 (2) Non-Sterile Compounding

Allows students hands-on experience compounding non-sterile products including ingredient calculations, measurements, and preparation techniques for creams, ointments, solutions, and suspensions. Students use compounding formulas, drug stability, and drug compatibility reference materials in the preparation of products with an emphasis on accuracy and safety. (0:0:20 for 3 weeks)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Semester 3 in the Pharmacy Technician program (Selkirk College).

PTEC 230 Community Practicum

Provides students with the opportunity to consolidate and apply the knowledge, skills and values attained from theory and lab courses. Students gain experience in the community setting and are evaluated based on their ability to demonstrate professional competencies required for entry to practice. (0:0:0 -180 for 9 weeks)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Semesters 1 - 3 in the Pharmacy Technician program (Selkirk) and Semester 4 at VIU.

PTEC 231 (4.5) Institutional Practicum

Provides students with the opportunity to consolidate and apply the knowledge, skills and values attained from theory and lab courses. Students gain experience in the institutional practice setting and are evaluated based on their ability to demonstrate professional competencies required for entry to practice. (0:0:0 -180 for 9 weeks)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Semesters 1 - 3 in the Pharmacy Technician program (Selkirk) and Semester 4 at VIU.
