RBMW 101T Introduction to Building Maintenance

An introduction to building maintenance work, including types of buildings, the building maintenance industry, the tasks done by a Residential Building Maintenance Worker, and basic trade terminology.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

RBMW 102T Safe Work Practices - Level 1

An introduction to safe work practices, including: Level 1 First Aid certification and Transport Endorsement, WHMIS certification. Topics also include: WCB safety regulations; fire safety; personal safety equipment; using ladders, scaffolding, and platforms; confined space entry and use of air packs; and lock out procedures.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

RBMW 103T Trades Math & Financial Calculations - Level 1

An introduction to trades math and financial calculations relevant to residential building service work. Topics include: conversions between metric and imperial units; arithmetic functions with whole numbers and fractions; and basics of plane (2D) geometry.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

RBMW 104T Tool Use and Maintenance - Level 1

An introduction to the use and maintenance of tools relevant to residential building maintenance work.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

RBMW 105T Building Structure & Design - Level 1

An overview of building structure and design for Residential Building Maintenance Workers. Topics include: relevant federal and provincial codes and local bylaws; reading and interpreting blueprints; residential concrete technology; structural element of wood frame construction; preparation of basic shop drawings.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

RBMW 106T Prevention & Remediation of Mould Issues - Level 1

An introduction to the prevention and remediation of mould issues in residential buildings. Topics include: types and causes of mould, recognizing and preventing mould issues; and remediating mould issues.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

RBMW 107T Carpentry Repair & Maintenance - Level 1

An introduction to carpentry for Residential Building Maintenance Workers. Topics include: carpentry materials; repair and maintenance of: stairs, landings, decks, cabinets and countertops, hardware, concrete, structural problems, windows and doors, baseboards and mouldings, cladding problems, infestation problems; and assessing the need for a journeyperson or contractor.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

RBMW 108T Drywall Repair - Level 1

An introduction to drywall repair for Residential Building Maintenance Workers. Topics include: drywall materials; patching, taping, mudding, and installing beads; sanding and finishing; repairing insulation and vapour barriers; and assessing the need for a journeyperson.

RBMW 109T Public Relations Skills - Level 1

An introduction to interpersonal skills and communication techniques in individual and group settings to deal with others effectively as a Residential Building Maintenance Worker.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

RBMW 110T Residential Building Maintenance - Enhanced Practical Skills

An opportunity for additional practical training to develop the skills and understanding required for residential building maintenance and repair.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

RBMW 111T Residential Building Maintenance - Work Experience

An opportunity for students to integrate and apply skills learned in a work experience placement. Students will gain skill practice and a deeper understanding of employer expectations, work standards, and practical application of skills.

Prerequisite: Admission to program; completion of all Level 1 Enhanced courses.

RBMW 202T Safe Work Practices - Level 2

A continuation of Safe Work Practices building on the Level 1 course. Topics include: use and maintenance of personal safety equipment, WCB regulations, applicable safety rules, safety when lifting and moving objects, and lock out procedures.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Level 1.

RBMW 204T Tool Use & Maintenance - Level 2

A continuation of Tool Use and Maintenance, building on the Level 1 course. Topics include: tool use in carpentry, roofing, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and floor repair; measuring and layout tools; water testing equipment.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Level 1.

RBMW 205T Building Structure & Design - Level 2

A continuation of Building Structure and Design, building on the Level 1 course. Topics include relevant provincial codes for work performed in residential building maintenance, and fire and life safety systems.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Level 1.

RBMW 209T Public Relations Skills - Level 2

A continuation of Public Relations Skills, building on the Level 1 course. The course focuses on conducting home owner and tenant orientations and training.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Level 1.

RBMW 210T Plumbing Repair & Maintenance - Level 2

An introduction to plumbing repair and maintenance for the Residential Building Maintenance Worker. Topics include: plumbing materials; plumbing maintenance and repair; initiating replacement of piping and hot water tanks; identifying plumbing problems; and assessing the need for a journeyperson or licensed contractor.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Level 1; or admission to Level 1 Enhanced program.

RBMW 211T Roofing Repair & Maintenance - Level 2

An introduction to roofing repair and maintenance for the Building Service Worker. Topics include: roofing materials; repair, maintenance and replacement of gutters, downspouts, flashings, shakes, shingles, panel roofing systems, venting systems, decks and sheathing; patching materials; roofing and weatherproofing problems; and assessing the need for a journeyperson or contractor.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Level 1; or admission to Level 1 Enhanced program.

RBMW 212T Flooring Repair & Maintenance - Level 2

An introduction to flooring repair and maintenance for the Residential Building Maintenance Worker. Topics include: flooring materials; preparation of substrate for flooring; repair and replacement of various types of flooring; identification of flooring problems; and assessing the need for a journeyperson or contractor.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Level 1; or admission to Level 1 Enhanced program.

RBMW 213T Heating & Ventilation Repair & Maintenance - Level 2

An introduction to heating and ventilation repair and maintenance for the Residential Building Maintenance Worker. Topics include: heating system materials, replacement of thermostats, inspection and maintenance of chimneys, furnace belts, chains and filters.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Level 1.

RBMW 214T Administrative Duties - Level 2

An introduction to administrative duties of the Residential Building Maintenance Worker. Topics include: maintaining records, completing forms and permits, and procuring materials.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Level 1.

RBMW 302T Safe Work Practices - Level 3

A continuation of Safe Work Practices, building on the Level 1 and Level 2 courses. Topics include: safe use of ladders, scaffolding, and platforms; related WCB regulations; and locking out power to electrical circuits and to an entire unit.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Levels 1 and 2.

RBMW 303T Trades Math & Financial Calculations - Level 3

A continuation of trades math and financial calculations, building on the Level 1 course. Topics include: estimating calculations for materials and services, budget calculations, and basic spreadsheets.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Levels 1 and 2.

RBMW 304T Tool Use & Maintenance - Level 3

A continuation of Tool Use and Maintenance, building on the Level 1 and 2 courses. Topics include: use and maintenance of hand tools, measuring and testing devices, lifting and hoisting equipment, and computer use.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Levels 1 and 2.

RBMW 305T Building Structure & Design - Level 3

A continuation of Building Structure and Design, building on the Level 1 and 2 courses. Topics include: application of federal, provincial, and local codes and by-laws; and identification of fire and life safety systems.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Levels 1 and 2.

RBMW 309T Public Relations Skills - Level 3

A continuation of Public Relations Skills, building on the Level 1 and 2 courses. Topics include: maintaining effective homeowner/tenant relations, effective communication skills, conducting orientation and training for tenants and homeowners, and liaising with regulatory officials and agencies.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Levels 1 and 2.

RBMW 313T Heating & Ventilation Repair & Maintenance - Level 3

A continuation of Heating and Ventilation Repair and Maintenance, building on the Level 2 course. Topics include: heat recovery ventilation systems, basic refrigeration and boiler theory, identifying heating and ventilation problems, performing minor repairs and implementing furnace maintenance, and assessing the need for a journeyperson or contractor.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Levels 1 and 2.

RBMW 314T Administrative Duties - Level 3

A continuation of Administrative Duties, building on the Level 2 course. Topics include: scheduling work, estimating costs, maintenance planning, and assessment of retrofitting of building for accessibility.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Levels 1 and 2.

RBMW 315T Basic Building Sciences - Level 3

An introduction to basic building science for the Residential Building Maintenance Worker. Topics include: forces that act upon a building, heat and sound transfer principles, and movement of air and moisture in a building.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Levels 1 and 2.

RBMW 316T Electrical Repair & Maintenance - Level 3

An introduction to electrical repair and maintenance for the Residential Building Maintenance Worker. Topics include: electrical materials, replacing existing receptacles and switches, testing for household appliance problems and electrical problems, and assessing the need for a journeyperson or contractor.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Levels 1 and 2; or admission to Level 1 Enhanced program.

RBMW 317T Paint and Wallpaper Application - Level 3

An introduction to paint and wall covering application for the Residential Building Maintenance Worker. Topics include: painting materials; preparation of surfaces; priming, painting, and staining surfaces; applying wall covering; and assessing the need for a journeyperson or contractor.

Prerequisite: Admission to program and completion of Levels 1 and 2; or admission to Level 1 Enhanced program.
