Children and high school students can enjoy fun, interactive summer camps at Vancouver Island University (VIU) in July and August.

High school science students are invited to sign up for GeneSkool, a free science camp at VIU’s Nanaimo campus July 20 to 24. Organized by Genome BC, the camp will appeal to students interested in learning about molecular biology techniques that geneticists and scientists use every day.

Through tailor-made experiments, students will explore aspects of biotechnology, genetics, genomics, pedigree construction, inheritance and ethics in genetics.

“Molecular biology is an integral part of our natural world,” says Sally Greenwood, Vice President, Communications and Education at Genome BC.

“The Genome BC Geneskool program offers students a chance to use advanced laboratory technology and techniques to see the tiny world that exists at the microbial level while learning, having fun and garnering a greater appreciation of the world around us.”

Children between the ages of six and 12 will enjoy learning about marine biology at summer camps held at VIU’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station in Bowser. These camps feature experiments, scavenger hunts, crafts, games, boat trips and more.

VIU Mariners are also offering numerous sports camps for children. As well, VIU’s highly popular GrandKids University takes place July 9 and 10 at the Nanaimo campus. Over two days, VIU’s faculty experts share their passion in a variety of subjects with grandkids ages seven to 13 and grandparents.
