Tartuffe is a comic play about a con artist extraordinaire who oozes piety and charm while duping a wealthy Parisian patriarch and seducing his wife.

Students in Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Theatre program present Tartuffe at the Malaspina Theatre (Building 310) on the Nanaimo campus, with opening night set for Wednesday, Nov. 5. Performance dates are Nov. 5, 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14 at 8 pm, with matinees scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 12 and 4 pm and Thursday, Nov. 12 at 12 pm.

Tartuffe is all about a con artist, about a guy who uses religion – appropriate for the time it was written in – to con his way into a house, where he completely dupes the head of the household, Orgon,” says Leon Potter, Theatre professor and director of the production.

The famous farce written in 1664 is a cautionary tale told with lightning-quick wit, complete with star-crossed lovers, a badgering grandma and a plot that could be ripped from the headlines – or a Saturday night comedy show, Potter adds.

Tickets at $10 for students and seniors 65+, and $12 for adults are available at the door.
