Annual event introduces new students to Nanaimo Campus
It’s time once again to come on out and get a taste of the university experience while exploring opportunities at Vancouver Island University (VIU) during the 2016 Spring Break Days. The event is held so all those students who have applied to come to VIU can settle their nerves and get comfortable with their new school. From March 14-18 and March 21-24, VIU student ambassadors will be available to highlight the facilities, residences and fun that is all a part of being a member of the VIU community.
“During Spring Break Days the campus is available for exploration. Applicants are welcomed at the Nanaimo campus and are shown around. They can sit in on classes, meet with current students, and tour the campus to get a feel for how amazing it is here,” said VIU Office of Enrolment Management’s Joanna Hesketh.
“This event provides an opportunity for future students who have applied to VIU to get a sense of what it means to be a student here. It’s more than being in a classroom – our students are part of a community and we want to introduce them to that community. Particularly, the ‘Ask a Student Ambassador’ sessions provide an opportunity to sit down with current students to get an honest perspective on what it really means to be part of VIU.”
Participants can register for tours, browse through the library, enjoy a meal at the cafeteria and learn about the world-class athletic programs and facilities that are available. Taking in a lab, sitting in on select classes and lectures or learning about the incredible array of programs including trades, business, sciences, humanities, human services, education, and performing arts is all a part of it.
“Going to University for the first time or returning after a break can be scary, no matter the age of the student,” said Hesketh.
“We want to help students make the right choice and this provides them an opportunity to gain some experience before making that big decision. It is important to help students understand that opportunities like our intimate classroom environments, a large variety of research programs, and so many options to study and work abroad really make a difference for student success.”
