The Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS) & Tutorial

The Tri-council Policy Statement (TCPS) is a common research ethics policy for human research conducted in institutions funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), which includes VIU .

VIU is committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards in research involving human participants and to seeing that the safety, health, welfare, and rights of participants are adequately protected (Policy 31.03). As part of that commitment, VIU requires that researchers be familiar with and follow the TCPS.

TCPS 2: Course on Research Ethics (CORE) Tutorial

The purpose of TCPS 2: CORE is to provide an introduction to TCPS 2, primarily for researchers and, secondarily, for REBResearch Ethics Board members. CORE provides an applied approach to the guidance provided in TCPS 2. This self-paced course is a media-rich learning experience that features interactive exercises and multi-disciplinary examples. CORE consists of eight modules ranging from Core Principles to REB Review. It is designed primarily for the use of researchers and REB members – though anyone may take this course and print their own certificate of completion.

The tutorial may take as little as 2 hours, and may be completed during several different sessions. To access the Tutorial and read the instructions click on the link provided: http://pre.ethics.gc.ca/eng/education/tutorial-didacticiel/.
