Scholarships
The Fisheries and Aquaculture Program has several scholarships and awards offered exclusively to Fish/Aqua students. Fall Awards - Application deadline of April 30th: funds are awarded as tuition credits. Spring Awards - Application deadline of January 15th: a cheque is issued to the recipient. Please scroll down for more information. Fish/Aqua students are also eligible for other awards offered by external organizations.
In addition, the Scholarship, Award and Bursary program at Vancouver Island University provides financial assistance, incentives and rewards for qualified students.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: VIU has scholarships specifically for international students: http://www.mala.ca/international/awards.asp International students can also apply for scholarships where financial need is not a criteria. Also as you may know, international students with 6 months of study completed can apply for an off campus work permit. That allows to work part time during the school year and full time during the summer.

BC Shellfish Industry Award
- 1 award, $700; for full-time students proceeding to fourth year in the Bachelor of Science in Fisheries & Aquaculture degree program, majoring in shellfish. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.
Cultured Crustacean Award
- 1 award, $1,000; to benefit students in the Fisheries & Aquaculture program who deserve financial help, and whose family background is in the resource industries: forestry, farming, aquaculture, fishing, mining or energy. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.
Eunice Lam Award(s)
- 1 $800; for students enrolled in a Fisheries & Aquaculture diploma or degree program, who demonstrate participation in community volunteer activities. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.
Fan Seafoods Ltd. Geoduck Endowment Scholarship
- 1 award, $375; for students returning for second year in the Fisheries & Aquaculture program who have demonstrated potential for practical research in Geoduck Aquaculture. GPA and outstanding work on the Geoduck project considered in selecting recipient. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.
Frank Bernard Award(s) in Fisheries
- 1 award, $2,000; for students continuing to second, third or fourth year in Fisheries & Aquaculture, who demonstrate financial need and above average dedication and commitment to their work. Students recommended by Fisheries & Aquaculture department. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.
Underwater Harvesters Association Research Society Award
- 1 award, $2,500; available to students continuing into third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Science in Fisheries & Aquaculture program. Applicants must submit a research paper on a topic of their choice related to their program; papers will be reviewed by the donor organization. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Vancouver Island University Degree Entrance Scholarships
- Awards, $1,000 each; available to students entering third year of the following degree programs: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Arts in Child & Youth Care, Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, Bachelor of Natural Resource Protection, Bachelor of Science in Biology, Bachelor of Science in Computing Science, Bachelor of Science in Fisheries & Aquaculture, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Tourism Management. No application necessary. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.
ECO Dynamic Solutions Inc. Achievement Award
- 1 award, $1,100; for academic achievement and demonstration of entrepreneurial skills, determination and leadership, available to first year students pursuing a Technical Diploma in Fisheries & Aquaculture at Vancouver Island University. This award is donated by Cedric Robert, a Fish/Aqua program graduate! No application necessary. Based on faculty recommendation. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.
Nicholas Plecas Aquaculture Scholarship
- 1 award, $1,000; for academic achievement and proficiency in the field; available to returning second-year Fisheries & Aquaculture students. No application necessary. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.
William E. Ricker Memorial Scholarship
- 1 award, $1,500; available to an outstanding third year student in Fisheries & Aquaculture who is going on to graduate studies in Fisheries; based on student’s third year of study, and as recommended by faculty. No application necessary. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.
New! Marine Harvest Salmon Aquaculture Scholarship
1 award, $1,500; for students returning for second year in Fisheries and Aquaculture program who have demonstrated academic achievement, applied skills and a career interest in finfish aquaculture. Based on recommendation of faculty. No application necessary. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.
Don Duncan Memorial Awards
- 2 awards, $450 each; available to students in Technology Programs: Fisheries & Aquaculture, Forest Resources, Resource Management; based on achievement and faculty recommendation. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by January 15. Funds issued in March.
Frederick Cairns Memorial Award
- 1 award, $500; for financial need, to a deserving student in the Fisheries & Aquaculture program. First preference to, but not exclusively for a resident of Cedar. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by January 15. Funds issued in March.

Aquaculture Association of Canada Student Scholarship: The review process will be administered to allow awards to be made before April 15,
2009. The deadline for receipt of applications is February 28, 2009. There are three, $1,000 scholarships available!
Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC Scholarship Award (Applications accepted until April 30th for the following fall tuition). There are two, $2,000 scholarships available!
