Graphic Design Alumna Unveils Public Sculpture in Nanaimo May 23

May 21, 2014 - 3:00am

A 2013 graduate of Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Graphic Design program will install artwork commissioned by the City of Nanaimo outside the Port Theatre Friday, May 23. Laura Timmermans responded to the City’s request for proposals for the art project, and was selected to create the original work.

Timmermans is currently working as a freelance graphic designer and says she likes to use her skills to inspire positive change.

“The message behind this sculpture is one of unity and connection,” she says. “I hope it will inspire people to think about how we are all connected to a greater web. The four hands joined by a centre circle represent the nature of existence as an integrated whole. The circle of rocks represents the message that our actions have impacts, and we can learn to live in harmony with our surroundings.”

Growing up in Ucluelet, Timmermans says she was deeply inspired by her natural surroundings and was strongly influenced by the First Nations culture and wisdom.

“I’ve been strongly influenced by the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation’s world view of ‘Heshook-ish Tsawalk’, which means all things are connected and interdependent,” she says. “I have chosen to use this First Nation’s wisdom as the framework for my art piece.”

A public unveiling of the art will take place at 125 Front St., outside the Port Theatre at 5:30 pm, and will be followed by refreshments.
