VIU is committed to sustainable development

Guided by VIU's Strategic Plan, the Nanaimo Campus Master Plan, and the provincial government’s Bill 44 VIU is working to:

  • Reduce its environmental footprint
  • Foster a strong sustainability ethic in the VIU community
  • Increase its leadership role in advancing comprehensive environmental, social, economic and cultural sustainability best practices on its campuses and in the communities it serves

VIU's Strategic Plan: People, Place and Potential includes a commitment to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals.

What is sustainable development?

Sustainable development “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

World Commission on Environment and Development
(Brundtland Commission), 1987

How will we achieve our goals?

Through:

  • Sharing information about sustainability issues
  • Interactive campaigns
  • Working with individuals
  • Celebrating the efforts and contributions toward sustainable development by the VIU community

By demonstrating and developing sustainability best practices and helping coordinate all the great ways individuals contribute to sustainability every day, significant, positive change will happen!
