Outdoor Recreation Programs

Outdoor recreation programs include a wide a range of activities at affordable rates. Outdoor recreation activities include:

  • non-credit courses in canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing and rock climbing.
  • scheduled swimming pool sessions including sauna, hot pool and weight room.
  • downhill and cross-country skiing, surfing, hiking, river kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, sea kayaking and river rafting.
  • leadership and skills training in sea kayak guiding and river rafting.

Mariners Athletics

VIU offers a full athletic program. To take part in varsity athletic teams, you must be registered in a minimum of nine credit hours of coursework per term. You must also meet academic requirements.

VIU is a member of the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST). There are 14 BC schools involved in the conference. Athletes travel to league and tournament commitments at schools in BC. Winners of provincial play-offs advance to national championships.

The Athletic department at VIU is traditionally one of the top programs in BC. and Canada. The Mariners have won 48 provincial titles and nine national titles.

The Navigator

The Navigator is the VIU newspaper. It’s published on 14 selected Wednesdays of the academic year. Students and VIU employees are invited to submit articles for publication.
