HAIR 100T Hygiene, Sanitation, and Disinfection Practices

A study of theoretical and practical knowledge related to hygiene, sanitation, and disinfection practices within the salon industry. Topics include salon ecology, microbiology, principles of infection control, and basic first aid. Students will perform general trade practices that include sanitizing and disinfecting tools and equipment and maintaining a safe and hygienic salon environment. HAIR 100T was formerly called HAIR 137T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

Prerequisite: Admission into the Hairstylist Foundation Certificate Program.

HAIR 101T Use and Maintenance of Tools and Equipment

A study of theoretical and practical knowledge related to use and maintenance of tools and equipment associated with the salon industry. Topics include the use and maintenance of single-use tools, cutting tools, styling tools, colouring tools, perm/relaxing tools, client capes, sanitizing and disinfecting equipment, major equipment, and office equipment. HAIR 101T was formerly called HAIR 137T HAIR 141T HAIR 146T HAIR 166T HAIR 156T HAIR 196T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

Prerequisite: Admission into the Hairstylist Foundation Certificate Program.

HAIR 102T Client Services

A study of theoretical and practical knowledge related to client services. Topics include personal and professional development, redefining character, communicating with confidence, planning for success, building a clientele, and creating an exceptional guest experience. Using appropriate client communication skills, students will perform design decisions based on the guiding principles of design composition and adaptability. HAIR 102T was formerly called HAIR 176T, HAIR 186T, HAIR 196T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

Prerequisite: Admission into the Hairstylist Foundation Certificate Program.

HAIR 103T Hair and Scalp Care

A study of theoretical and practical knowledge related to hair theory, hair care and evaluation, draping, shampooing and scalp massage. Topics include hair formation; evaluation; hair loss and common hair and scalp conditions; and infection control and safety. Students will perform evaluation, draping, shampooing and conditioning services, and scalp massage services on live clients. HAIR 103T was formerly called HAIR 137T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HAIR 104T Hair Cutting

A study of theoretical and practical knowledge related to hair cutting and sculpture. Topics include sculpture transformation and design and essential sculpting techniques. Students will perform hair sculpture on a variety of hair textures and types on mannequins and live models before advancing towards combination forms, men's sculpting theory, and cutting facial and nape hair. HAIR 104T was formerly called HAIR 141T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

Prerequisite: Admission into the Hairstylist Foundation Certificate Program.

HAIR 105T Hair Styling

A study of theoretical and practical knowledge related to the art and design of hair styling. Topics include the art of hair design; the use and handling of professional tools; basic and advanced wet and thermal hair design techniques; and long hair design. Students will regularly perform hairstyling services on both mannequins and live models. HAIR 105T was formerly called HAIR 146T; HAIR 147T; HAIR 148T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

Prerequisite: Admission into the Hairstylist Foundation Certificate Program.

HAIR 106T Chemical Waving and Relaxing of Hair

A study of theoretical and practical knowledge related to chemical waving and relaxing of hair. Topics include perming and texture transformations; design decisions; basic perming techniques; perm patterns such as rectangle pattern, bricklay pattern, and contour pattern; and basic relaxing theory including relaxing principles, results, and guidelines. HAIR 106T was formerly called Hair 156T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HAIR 107T Hair Colouring

A study of theoretical and practical knowledge related to hair colouring. Topics include the possibilities of colour, the Law of Colour, and basic colour design which includes essential colour design formulation and techniques. Students progress towards advanced colour design including the procedures and performance of colour correction. HAIR 107T was formerly called HAIR 166T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HAIR 108T Specialized Services

A study of theoretical and practical knowledge related to specialized services. Topics include the principles of applying wigs and hairpieces, and the principles of using hair extensions. HAIR 108T was formerly called HAIR 138T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

Prerequisite: Admission into the Hairstylist Foundation Certificate Program.

HAIR 109T Business Management

A study of theoretical and practical knowledge related to business management within the salon industry. Topics include recognizing changes in the industry and the impact on business practices; employing current practices and techniques to market products and services. Student will perform salon operations, complete financial transactions, maintain products inventory, and market products and services. HAIR 109T was formerly called HAIR 137T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

Prerequisite: Admission into the Hairstylist Foundation Certificate Program.

HAIR 110T Experiential Learning: Salon Module

This course provides students with an opportunity to enhance their skills and build their confidence in a teaching salon while under the supervision of instructional faculty. Students will be inspired by guest artists through a series of workshops, complete a two-week industry placement, and carry out a variety of receptionist duties related to the salon's daily operation.

Prerequisite: Admission into the Hairstylist Foundation Certificate Program.

HAIR 125T Integrated Salon Experience

Students will apply their knowledge and skills in a recognized professional salon.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 136T Theory I

Topics include a written assessment of professional development, salon ecology, anatomy and physiology, hairstyling, hair cutting, hair colouring, permanent waving, chemistry, reception, and trichology. Includes a final exam of Level One from all the above assessments.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 137T Theory II

A continuation of Hair 136T. Topics include a written assessment of hair colouring set 3, hair colouring set 4, people skills, chemical hair relaxing. Includes a combined final exam for Level Two from the above assessments.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 138T Theory III

Topics include a written assessment of wigs and hair additions, study of the nails, study of the skin, and electricity. Includes a final exam composed of questions from all three levels.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 141T Hair Shaping I

Emphasizes the identification of haircutting tools, areas of the head, and fundamental cutting techniques when cutting the hair. Focuses on the proper procedures to achieve the following basic haircuts on manikins and clients: solid, graduation, increase layer, uniform, and plannar.

HAIR 142T Hair Shaping II

A continuation of HAIR 141T with additional topics focusing on combination cuts, men's cutting, finishing, and texturizing techniques.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 143T Hair Shaping III

A continuation HAIR 142T with particular emphasis on uniform and circle hair cuts.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 146T Hair Styling and Design 1

An introduction to the art of hair design, hairstyling procedures, and use and handling of professional tools. Emphasis on mastering base and hair control, as well as many styling procedures to produce professional styles and fashions. Focuses on proficient use of styling tools and implements..

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 147T Hair Styling and Design II

A continuation of HAIR 146T, with additional topics of design decisions, creating styles to suit the client, professional finishing techniques, and products to achieve the desired styles for various hair types and lengths.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 148T Hair Styling and Design III

A continuation of HAIR 147T, focusing on demonstrating designs and styles to achieve a professional appearance.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 156T Chemical Texturizing I

An applied physical and chemical process to permanently alter the texture of hair in a safe and professional manner. Emphasis is placed on physical and chemical processes involved in different classifications of chemical texturizing hair, as well as different techniques and procedures to produce professional results.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 157T Chemical Texturizing II

A continuation of HAIR 146T with more emphasis placed on styles, techniques, and current fashions.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 158T Chemical Texturizing III

A continuation of Hair 157T.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 166T Hair Colouring I

An applied application of hair colour to the new growth (1/2 inch) only. Emphasizes the even application to the regrowth, clean small parts, adequate coverage, keeping sections out from scalp, aware of hand position.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 167T Hair Colouring II

A continuation of HAIR 166T, with more emphasis on permanent colours, lighteners, and fillers as well as focusing on techniques and trends used in current fashion.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 168T Hair Colouring III

A continuation of HAIR 167T, with emphasis placed on client colour consultation, colour selection, and formulation of mixtures as well as practical application and technique.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 176T Professional Development and Employability Skills I

An introduction to personal and professional development with major emphasis on personal development to promote success within the program to become a professional hairstylist. Topics include credibility, reliability, responsibility as well as personal and professional ethics.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 177T Professional Development and Employability Skills II

A continuation of 176T with the addition of a two-week in-salon practicum component.

Prerequisite: Admission into Certificate Program.

HAIR 178T Professional Development and Employability Skills III

A continuation of 177T with an additional two week in-salon practicum component.

HAIR 186T Client Services I

An introduction to effective and efficient demonstration of hair services on clients. Focus will be placed on practicing and incorporating solid patterns of effective communication and people skills to establish a professional relationship with clients as well as demonstrating technical service skills.

HAIR 187T Client Services II

A continuation of HAIR 186T with emphasis on professional relationships with clients while demonstrating client services in a professional manner.

HAIR 188T Client Services III

A continuation of HAIR 187T.

HAIR 196T Salon Business I

An introduction on the effective operation of a professional salon. Emphasis will be placed on team building, operational duties of the salon, and receptionist responsibilities.
